    Default Heard a new myth yesterday

    A guy stated that a relative saw a brand new Lincoln Continental Mark II being delivered new to his uncle's home where it was brought there in a felt-lined van and came with it's own personal Continental mechanic.

    Anyone ever hear of Continental offering home delivery in a felt-lined truck box?

    When I stated what he was saying was not true he got very adamant that whatever his Uncle said was true, because he said it was true.

    This is the world we are forced to live in.

    Did the mechanic come with his own supply of whiskey or rum? Being factual, because being a mechanic way back when didn’t always attract the best people to fill a position.

    It also could be his uncle bought one of these when it was a 20 year old, $500 car and wanted to make himself feel better about owning such a vehicle. Not sure how you’ve felt about my answers to some of your posts but I say take everything with a grain of salt. A lot of people and things are not coming out of this pandemic the same way they went in. It is upsetting but I find a hell of a lot of amusement in things now especially after getting rid of social media. Like I said before, some topics are worth going down a rabbit hole over to find out where truth lies and in this case, this guy who made this highly erroneous claim is just a victim of false information that he was taught. No sense in being mad at someone like that but I do see your frustration. Remember, all of you who are here today are the ones who are getting correct information about these cars. It’s up to you to teach people what is right and what they have wrong about our cars.

    Got a new one. The guy that owns 3892 claims his car is fitted with 3.5" wide brake shoes from a Mark III, like it makes a difference what model they are from. The '58 sheetmetal and mechanicals were all the same.

    At first I thought, why do it? Then I asked how could you do it? Are the 14" spindles made for 1" wider drums interchangeable on the Mark II a-arms? Wouldn't the geometry change if there was a height difference?

    Now, that being said, people do use 15" wheels on later Lincolns so wheel wouldn't be a problem if the bolt pattern matched. I believe the wheels are lug, not hub, centric.

    There might be a decent why, but would 20% more friction material be enough of a difference to go through all of that? It would be back-plate, spindle, and drums from a one year newer car. That would show up on a DSO, no?

    I asked for pictures, but he said none exist.

    I would be very curious to see how 58-59 front brakes drums even will fit on a MarkII because they actually don’t to my knowledge. Now it is true, you can put 15 inch rims on the 58-59 drum but a continental mark II wheel will not fit on a 58-60 drum because the drum hub face is inset and the drum contacts the wheel before the hub flange does. If he is talking 68-71 MarkIII, that can be done because I’ve seen it and Axel Holm taught me the modifications that must be done in order for it to work. Again, there is so much misinformation put out there about these cars. Most books and half the owners had it wrong is why I believe the LCOC has had its bouts of dysfunction between owners and also why you’ve had such a rough go of things. One of the things I hope you realize is all the research you’ve had to do, up ended what many of us thought they had right and angrily regurgitated back at you. Keep in mind with me collaborating on your questions, you ask some heavy questions and bring up points that make you think, I’m answering you in the best way I know how and to be honest, it’s amusing in a good way, makes you think.

    Oh, you doubters! All of my Rolls Royce and Bentleys that I have ever owned have come with sealed engine compartments and lifetime warranties. If I should ever have an issue, I call the UK and they fly over a specialist to resolve any issues. I sleep well at night knowing I have lifetime warranties (including all maintenance).

    I have heard my stated RR myths many times over the last 25 years and there were many days when I wished for that mythical specialist to appear when I was working alone in my garage.

    Here is an interesting tidbit on Bentley CPO warranties. No sure it still holds true but I exploited it about 8 years ago. Let's assume you buy a 3 year cpo warranty for your relatively new Bentley that is going out of factory warranty. After 1 year, you trade the car into a Bentley dealer. Obviously, there are two years of unused warranty. Although it is not advertised, you can request a prorated refund of the unused warranty. Bentley would refund you 2/3 of the money that it received and the dealer that sold you the CPO warranty must refund you 2/3 of his cut. I don't know any other car manufacturer that does that.

    Rolls Royce does not offer the pro-rated refund, the warranty follows the car. Their CPO program (provenance warranty) does have some advantages compared to Bentley. You can extend the warranty up to 12 years; my 2010 Phantom drophead is under provenance warranty which is close or the same as the original factory warranty. In addition, for many years, all standard maintenance was also covered by the provenance warranty. I think that just changed in the last year or so. You have to pay extra for maintenance coverage.
