    Default Removing the plastic pieces for re-painting

    All my plastic knob pieces and steering wheel have all turned the famous Mark II green due to the chemical reaction.

    My door handle plastic pieces were easy to take of by unscrewing the handles after loosening their set screws.

    I am unable to get the small plastic piece off of the turn signal arm and the shift arm.

    I have driven the roll pin out of the shift arm and expected to be able to pull the arm out of the steering collum but it won't come out.

    can anyone tell me how to get my shift arm out?

    I can't unscrew either the turn signal end piece or the shifter end piece.

    I've removed the turn signal arm in order to paint it's plastic piece.

    I'm assuming I must also paint the shift arm plastic piece on the arm which is why I am trying to get the shift arm removed.

    Can anyone tell me how to get the shift arm removed?

    I see that over 50 people have looked at this post but noone has made a coment.

    Is it possible noone has ever removed these plactic parts for repaint/

    there are a lot of these out there that have turned color due to the chemical reactions of the colors.

    I've ordered a new plastic piece for my shift rod because I assume I must destroy mine in order to get it of the shift arm.

    Once I get the plastic piece off I hope I will be able to get the chrome piece off the end of the arm.

    I understand it is pressed on and not screwed on as the door handles are.

    I still would like to know what the trick is to get the shift arm off after removing the roll pin.

    I removed my red ones from the shaft by inserting a thin sharp blade between the plastic and the cap and tapping gently around the perimeter until a gap formed. I then sprayed liberally with WD40 and let sit a few minutes. I then worked around with thicker and thicker blades until it came loose. Do not pry use the wedge to try and keep the plastic from chipping. Luckily you can fill any chips before painting with a plastic filler (I used 3M red scratch filler) and paint with spray paint.

    Some folks have used a hair dryer to heat up the glue and just pull off the knob. Check this out:

    Thanks John! I did not need the heat on the red ones from 3340 - the glue had no real strength to it - but I do not know if the other colors react with the glue over time in a different manner. Somewhere I have pics of the pieces when I did this...

    Thanks, John,

    I tried grabbing the plastic piece with plyers and then hit the plyers with a hammer and still couldnt get it off.

    I bought new plastic pieces from Mark Ii Enterprises in case I have to destroy the plastic piece to getit apart.
