Are there any interchangeable distributors for a 56 ?

Sort of. The problem is the Tach. That then leaves the 57 Mercury Turnpike Cruiser for a direct switch. Also as a problem you have the Holley 4000 Carb on the 56 which requires the dual diaphragm vacuum advance. You can change the carb and the distributor to the 57 single diaphragm unit which is a much better distributor. 1957 Thunderbirds with tachs used the same distributor with a different drive gear. Just take the gear off yours and install it on the t- bird unit. Be advised that the 57 tbird units are expensive...

The 55's will work but do not have advance weights in them.
