1530 * New from Maryland.

Hi everybody. I recently joined the group to do a little research on a MKII that we have acquired from an estate collection at the dealer I work for. There doesn't seem to be a lot documented that I can find on this one. It's car number 1530. It has an older teal repaint on it, has had the front upholstery replaced at some point, and I'm assuming by lack of engine number, that it's had an engine swap somewhere along the way. I have little history on the car. It came from Washington state approx. 15 years ago, and the owner passed away about 5 years ago. We have the car here, cleaned up, and his estate is now looking to sell it.

We acquired 1530 through an estate at the dealer I work for. They are looking to sell it... but I am NOT a salesman. It's part of my job to help look after the old cars we have in our collection here. I have limited history on the car, but will try to answer any questions you have. I was told it was mostly original, but I'll point out what I see with the car. I'm sure you guys can pick it apart much better than I can.
It came from Washington State to the East Coast about 15 years ago. The current owner passed a few years ago. It runs, drives, and stops well. It has an older repaint, with very little rust showing around the rear wheel wells. The front seat appears to have been reupholstered at some time, and I'm assuming by lack of engine number stamping, that it's been replaced. It does have the correct stamping number on the block, just no engine number. I also have professional pics if anyone would like to see them. They are asking $25,000 for it.

Nick, The engine number is stamped into the block next to the distributor. I guess you know know front seat is incorrect. Here's a link to the info the Forum has on the car.

I took a picture of that area that I posted above. I see no number stamped there after I cleaned down to the gold paint (there is gold under the bad blue spray bomb!), so I assumed this wasn't the original engine. Is that incorrect?

Thanks! I'll pass that along to the owner.

Try removing the throttle return spring bracket. Sometimes the SN is stamped there. I would hazard a guess if there is gold paint at the bottom of the crud that it is a Continental engine.

I will be assisting a friend in restoring a 56 Mark II he resently purchased. Probably start sometime in March upon my return from Florida. Serial is 56C01530. Info from data plate in left door jam. Where should I look for other numbers? He can I trace previous owners?

I thought I was a sponsoring member for at least a month.
I have an update on 1530. I found a casting number on top and rear of the engine; ECU6015A. Another number stamped on top rear between the diistributor and the throttle return spring bracket is 544. I found a number 3 stamped on the engine under the throttle return spring bracket. I have no idea why somebody painted the engine blue, but I'm optimistic that the engine is correct and original. You guys are the experts. What is your opinion?

1524 has engine # 538, so your engine is original to you car.

Since there aren't any records of engine numbers, we use a "Rule of Thumb" on the forum. Take the last four of your VIN (1530) and subtract the stamped engine numbers (544); 1530 minus 544 equals 986. Your variance of 986 is in the acceptable "Rule of Thumb" range of 982 to 989. I agree with Nick that your engine is original to your car.
