Hi-
My name is Matt McDowall I am from St. Cloud, Minnesota and my father and I just purchased a 56' Mark II in Marysville Ohio. I was told the car was orginally owned by Joseph Sill Clark a Pennsylvania Senator in the 50's and 60's. The car is black in color with a white and green/gray interior. I would appreicate anything anyone can tell me about this car or build plate decoding in general. The build plate information is as follows:
Serial #
C5601402
Body #
01-1E6L-103-2
Style#
II-60A
I think this site is really great the Mark II is wonderful car that has such an insteresting history. I addition to the Mark II we also have several other Lincoln's: 1970 Mark III, 1973 Mark IV, and 1976 Town Car. All three are orginal with the IV only have 3,700 orginal miles. I look forward to meeting and learning from all of you.
Thank You,
Matt McDowall

Wow, Matt, we have similar collections. Welcome to the site.

Your car was originally black with a leather interior with deep gray biscuits, white bolsters and deep gray welts. Sounds very attractive. It was built the 3rd of Oct, 1955, second in rotation for that day.

It came with bumper guards.

Sounds like it may have been an Introductory Unit. There are Production Orders available from the Benson Ford Research Center. That document may reveal additional information.

Barry-
Thats great. What I am interested in is how you came up with your findings? I have some experience with vin decoding, but have been unable to find anything to decode the mark build plate. What is a production order? and What is the Benson Ford Research Center? Thanks for all the great info. I will get some pics up ASAP.

I cheated. It's all in the Mark II Encyclopedia. Unfortunately, copies are made of unobtanium.

I'll post the chart later under Documents.

Welcome to the site.

Matt,

Welcome to the forum. Your car sounds nice. Mine has a 1B6L interior. (All white leather seats with deep gray piping). Anything we can help you with pertaining to your Mark II, just ask and we will do our best to help you out.

Chuck,

Can you add Matt's car to the data base?

No the car does not have A/C and appears to have never been an A/C car.

I cheated. It's all in the Mark II Encyclopedia.

Barry, Does Matt's car show up in the 2002 edition? Wasn't in my 1992.

I believe your list is incomplete. Your list was compiled from the Invoices and my list was compiled by Lowell Domholdt from the Production Orders. The difference, from what I've seen, is that your list doesn't include the 300 or so Introductory Units that were never invoiced because they belonged to Ford and were not to be sold until there were others in the pipeline. How else would you sell a $10,000 car. I wouldn't buy one sight-unseen.

So is this a special list or the one in the 2002 version of the Mark II Ency.?

I'd like to get as many car on the list as possible.

Already done :)

Chuck,

I checked the data base list and for some reason, the space between 1401 and 1403 comes up blank for me.

I have that information already plugged into the Exel spread sheet. I have about 25 cars entered. I've marked the missing numbers IU for Introductory Unit until someone has documentation otherwise. So far, the majority have been black.

This will take some time as I am entering them one at a time.

Oh, I've added it to my list and forwarded to Barry for more that he has. As soon as it's updated, the posted list will be refreshed. This should be fun to cultivate. :)
