1496 -Seeking information about 1957 Continental MK II

This appears to be 1498:

http://www.hemmings.com/classifieds/cars-for-sale/continental/mark-ii/1756607.html

Copy:1956 Continental Mark II, Feel like a movie star in this newly restored and rebuilt-motor powder blue exterior with blue leather interior Continental. The Mark II was produced only in 1956 and 1957. There are less than 3,000 in existence today. The Mark II came standard with an 8 cylinder 368cid/285HP/4BBL engine. This 2 door, 126" wheel base has chrome trim, power steering/brakes/seats/windows/tachometer, electric clock, AM radio and white walls. The car is close to concours status at $108,000.

That's a very nice car but for $108,000, the details should have been sweat a little bit more. I don't see a hood blanket, the Continental logo is missing on the right fender, looks like the left fender logo needs to be replated and has some blemishes around it and the spare tire cover should be there.

Am I nit picking? Yes but at that price, there should be no nits to pick in my opinion.

Brian,

For that sum there should be no nits , buts or excuses. It does have the light blue nylon biscuits which I've not seen before. Me like a lot.

This car appears to be scheduled for auction 06 June 2017. Pre-auction "estimate" in the Hemmings ad is $122,500:

https://www.hemmings.com/classifieds/cars-for-sale/continental/mark-ii/1951586.html#&gid=1&pid=1

The auction site says minimum bid $98,000, and there is a reserve:

https://bno.com/202/auctions/auction_item/1956-continental-mark-ii

I agree it's a good-looking Mark II but the few small photographs make it hard to take the "BNO" auction site seriously.

This is a wonderful example of the iconic 1956 Continental Mk II that is a great car for local and regional shows and touring. This Mk II has benefitted from an excellent repaint in its original Light Blue (Paint Code 04) with painstaking effort to align the body panels and a beautifully polished finish. The undercarriage proves that this car was not exposed to weather as it is without any rust or signs of repair or damage of any kind. The chrome and stainless are also beautifully refinished and are mostly show quality. Even the wheel covers have been restored to appear as new. And the radial tires with the correct width white walls look just right. This Continental is a very early example and was invoiced on October 11th, 1955 and was built as you see it today. It was sold to J.W. Stanton Inc. in Painesville, OH. J. William Stanton was a congressman and counselor to the World Bank for many years. His father was a very early employee of the Ford Motor Co. The chrome and stainless trim are in excellent overall condition. The bumpers and grill are in excellent condition. It is apparent that all the exterior trim has been re-chromed during the restoration. Some of the interior trim pieces have some very light pitting. The large chrome door sill and jamb pieces also look very nice. Overall, the chrome and stainless is in very nice condition. The interior is a combination of restored and original components in its original Medium Blue Leather contrasted with Light Blue Nylon inserts (Trim Code 2A1A). The Deep Blue carpet is original and is in overall nice condition with some sign of fading. The interior is showing minimal patina and is overall in excellent original condition. The dashboard and trim have never been restored, showing that this was a well-cared for example through the last 67 years. The trunk is also very well detailed in deep blue carpeting and a deep blue custom fitted cover for the spare. There are some cracks in the steering wheel and minor scratches in the high use areas within the interior. Continentals offered 19 different exterior color combinations and 43 interior combinations. The engine compartment is very well detailed and is show quality. It is obvious that significant time and attention was given to the engine compartment and related mechanicals. This is a very nice driving example with the venerable 368 CID V8 with 285 hp and the Turbo-Drive automatic transmission. The chassis has been well cleaned and painted with some light undercoating applied to the floorplans. The Mk II drives very nice and proves to be a very nice and solid car that has never been subjected to rust or significant issues. According to a Continental Mark II expert who evaluated this Continental, this would likely be an example with about 70-80,000 miles from new with recent full mechanical and suspension restoration. It runs and drives better than any Mark II that we've experienced and could be enjoyed on tours with little to no effort. All the instruments and gauges function well, even the clock is operating. Ford created the Continental division, making the Mk II a Continental and in no way part of Lincoln. These were about the price of a new home ($10,000) and it was common for you to have to qualify to buy one of the 3,000 built when new. This was the most expensive American car made, targeted directly at the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud. Each example was painstakingly hand-built with the finest materials. The Hagerty Price Guide shows a No. 2 value of $88,500. The Continental Mk II will always be one of the most significant post-War American cars and is considered a classic. This is an example of one that is very solid and ready to enjoy. For more details and information, call, text or email Harry Clark at 1.602.245.7200 or . Continental Mark II
Interesting Fact: The Continental Mark II was the only product line ever marketed by Continental, which was a division of Ford. This ultra-luxury coup? was sold during 1956 and 1957 and was the worldwide flagship vehicle for Ford Motors. This vehicle was the most expensive American-produced automobile of its time and, as such, was marketed?

#1498 History has been updated:

https://www.markiiforum.com/showthread.php?2143-1498-2024-Eugene-L-Brown-Denver-CO-1955-JW-Stanton-Inc-Painesville-OH-JW-Staunton-Jr&p=63031#post63031

Significant Notes:

(1) The upholstery was redone including replacement of the original nylon biscuits with a fabric that looks close to the original nylon. That's almpst never done when restoring upholstery with nylon biscuits.

(2) This car does not have its original frame. -See the 1498's history.

I have a 1957 #C5601498 and would like to know what I can regarding the original build specifications.
I would also appreciate knowing if it came with a Carter or Holly carburetor.
Thanks!

Bruce:
1498 is a 1956 model not 1957. Your car came equipped with a Holley tea pot carb and an oil bath air cleaner
Just put 1498 (the last four of the VIN) in the upper right hand corner search box and press the magnifying icon to search.
Welcome to this forum. Hope this helps. Hit us back with issues/questions.

Thanks very much! Regarding the "VIN" #, is the 4th digit a zero or a O?

Put in the last four digits. 1498
In answer to your question, it is a zero.

True enough. And there are two additional threads below your questions. If you do not see all the threads, private message Shelly Harris for assistance

I am confused though I thought your car is 1498 not 1496.
Which is it.? Make certain you enter the correct last four

1498 or 1496 came with a Holley t-pot 4 barrel carburetor regardless. A tpot is a carburetor I will not attempt to rebuild or re-gasket no matter what, I consider myself an experienced mechanic but I wont do them. Same goes for the bendix treadlevac, can’t get those right either.

I have rebuilt them but they're such an ancient carb I am tempted to use a more current carb or maybe a holly injection setup. Has anyone found a great replacement?

Morgan, have you had a chance to find those part numbers on the pieces you used to replace the "t-vac"? Also would it be possible for you to walk me thru the procedure by phone sometime in the future? Thanks, George Perry

I had a place here in Phoenix called Rods Carburetors who rebuilt my T-pot. Once they are rebuilt right they seem to be pretty good. I haven’t had any problems in the 2-3 years it’s been done. There are literally all kinds of things you can do if you want to get away from carburetors. I’ve installed one FI tech, one Edelbrock fuel injection and around 7 Holley sniper 2s. They are challenging and time consuming but it can be done, just have to follow the instructions to a “T” and use non RFI spark plug wires. George I can walk you through and show you pictures of what I did to convert my car from the Treadlevac send me A PM with your number and I’ll call you.
