Valves are hanging up due to either the engine being ran on bad gas or lack of top end lubrication. It is kind of a common problem especially on cars that sit for long periods of time. How I fix it without removing the heads is I will take the rocker arms off as an assembly from the pedestals (do not mess with the adjuster on the rocker arms themselves) hit them with a hammer while spraying the valve stems through the springs with PB blaster. If the valves just bounce and close, they are free. Usually a stuck one will struggle to return to top, indicating a problem valve.

Thanks for the suggestion, i will check this out, i also note that MK11 Enterprises do upgraded rods

much appreciated

The Mark II push rods in stock form are more than sufficient for use in a car. Look to Morgan's input. His knowledge is vast.

Hi Morgan
hi have one valve which seems tight all others seem to bounce and sound the same, the stubborn one has been wd40 sprayed few times and still seems tight
it has a different sound to others
i will keep lubricating
if i price down with a screwdriver with leverage from the next string in the run it does go down and seems to return to top
im hoping this approach will save me taking heads off

It can and will take a few tries, this process can take hours sometimes. PB Blaster seems to penetrate better than WD40 just so you know. Helping the valve back up with a flat tipped screw driver is a good idea.

Be patient. I used PB Blaster on my Mark II that hadn't been started in 6 years. It took me a couple of weeks and several times adding more PBB to get the two stuck valves unstuck. I used the Mark II Ent. push rods and they are good.

3289232893 This is from the shop manual for the 1956 engine. Personally, don’t mess with the adjusters unless you have to. Sorry about the sideways orientation, a 2010 forum and a 2025 IPhone don’t jive well.

Thanks for the cylinder procedure, push rods (upgraded) are due today with new cover gasket too, I have looked on line to try to establish the correct valve/tappet settings as im sure somebody has messed with the adjustments

I can see 3 x different lots of information and just seek clarification

1- 0.018 for both inlet and exhaust

2 - 0.018 for inlet and 0.23 for exhaust

3- inlet 0.018 and exhaust 0.020

last thing i want is more push rod issues

thanks again for any support or information
