View Full Version : Battery
After waiting for a year I finally got a Battery from Interstate . They told me the mold broke and they couldn't get any . So if you need one contact a dealer. Gary

I took my bad Power Punch AGM retro battery and cut the front of the case off. Inside is a smaller OAGM battery that is just bolted to the terminals with 2 wires. It was epoxied to the bottom of the case so I used my multimate and cut the bottom of the case off. I bought the same smaller battery and then used the Continental Battery rubber covers Jack sells to clad the battery. I also installed a cut off switch below one of the yellow fill caps to let me cut off the negative lead.

I have mentioned this more than once on this forum and even on the Mark II forum on Facebook and that is use a Group 50 battery used in Ford Econoline vans from the 2000's as
Ambulance/emergency or RV as an auxiliary battery!!
It is the typical MODERN MAINTENANCE FREE design typically used in most modern vehicles of the flooded lead batteries and in no way shape or form one of those GARBAGE AGM batteries! Modern maintenance free FLOODED LEAD batteries use a Lead Calcium alloy whereas the conventional flooded with screw caps use only lead in the plates. Lead Calcium reduces drawing too much power in the event of being overcharged at too high a voltage whereas lead only keeps drawing, charged or not, gets hotter, and starts boiling off water along with acid fumes and is why you have to add water and clean the terminals.
Did you get the measurements of a Group 32N used in full size Mercury, Lincoln, Continental or 1956 to perhaps 1960 ??? I used the measurements in my search and discovered Group 50 is very close! I am not promoting these sites and only use it because they provide the measurements.
The OEM battery originally used for Mercury, Lincoln and Continental is Group 32N. Battery dimensions are 14? L x 5 ??W x 9?H.
The Group 50 dimensions are 13 13/16"L x 8 13/16" T x 5 9/16" W with some being advertised as 13.2 ? 5.6 ? 8.8 in, or 13-3/8" 5-3/8" 8-7/8"
Take your pick! Some are slightly larger in width and some are slightly smaller in width. Quite often the height includes the post as well but do your research!
If I used the measurements to come up with an alternative, why havent others🤔. Since I'm up in Canada, my options for a Group 32N are few and far between and in order to get a garbage AGM reproduction, by the time I recieve it using a $0.69 Snow Mexican Pesos, not even factoring foriegn exchsnge surcharges, 11% tax at border and extremely expensive American shipping also in usd I'm looking at $1000.00!!!
One fellow I know has a 3D printer and I showed him a reproduction 32N Continental Mark II OEM battery overlay to disguise a generic reproduction 32N Tar Top with screw caps on the top as a factory Mark II battery with the Yellow Continental Star on the front and he said absolutely no problem! He said there are two kinds of plastic, maybe more with one being more flexible and one being harder and more brittle. He can take my front overlay, prior to when the usual suspect only made it for the front but now makes the ends, or he said he could make me a wrap around overlay covering both ends and the front or even a replica case to lower it into. If your wondering about the height, there are post extensions you slide over your posts locked on with a tiny set screw and of course the 3D printer could be used to reproduce an imitation tar top with phony lead straps painted metalic gray😂. I can hand him my overlay or he can use a picture with measurements as well.
As for a taller battery with a replicated top, head over to a dealership dealing in Semi tractors or even agricultural equipment and ask them what they have for J hooks used as battery hold downs and get some a bit longer if required.
A Group 50 battery is currently easier to find than a Group 2 six volt used in my 1950 Mercury and my battery is the typical conventional flooded lead battery with screw caps and needs water added. They are getting harder to find as I discovered needing a battery last summer. I have been driving this 50 Mercury for about 40 years now and it is still on 6 volts and don't have any intentions of converting it to 12 volts if I can avoid it.

Take a picture off of Jack's site and find somebody with a 3D printer and save the cost of the overlays😂🤣👍. This saving in cost can also go towards the purchase of a 3D printer as well.
