Its about 12 inches long, about 4 inches wide at the widest section. I didn't see it in any of my manuals

I'd say its off something else ..if Barry or Holger don't recognize it (they, with others, have stripped cars right back to each nut and bolt) then its safe to say its nothing to do with a Mkii.

I'm 99% sure it's not from a Mark ii. I had every nut and bolt off my car and don't remember this.
I first thought that this item belongs to the emergency brake but I was not right, see the attached pictures:
I did not find a part of my Mark II, that looks like this item.

I don't think it is for a mark II. If there is a hole in the front, it almost looks like a support for a power steering ram.

Holger, I think you were right the first time. This part holds up the Emergency Brake Handle on my 3 cars.
