Default 1849, End of Life as a parts car?

I have purchased the Mark II engine with the engine number 870 and some other parts.

When the vin is 982 higher than the engine number, the engine belonged to 1852.

The seller wasn't able (or didn't want) to answer my question for the vin.

    Default Not so fast!

The 982 difference is a rule-of-thumb that generally applies. However there are many variances which makes the 982 not a 100% certainty.

For instance here are the documented cars and engine numbers in the vicinity of engine number 870.

    VIN ENG # Diff
    1680 698 982
    1693 711 982
    1743 764 979
    1751 772 979
    1762 783 979
    1847 869 978
    1885 903 982
    1893 911 982
    1911 929 982
    1947 965 982

    See what I mean?

    Pat,

my post was of course just a guess, see the question mark in the title.

I will try to contact the seller once more to get knowledge about the vin .

Holger, thank you for the VIN!

I have updated the 1849's history with the information you have submitted:

    http://www.markiiforum.com/showthrea...7947#post17947

As you can see other than the original dealer invoice we have no other information on 1849 except that you bought the engine 51 years later. Any other information that you have or can find about the car's history would be very helpful.

Have you absolutely confirmed that 1849 was parted out? A car that was customized might have similar parts left over.
