Remember the paint on whitewalls or the whitewall rings? Why bother sanding, just drive down the curb for a mile and get the same results!

I don't recall wide whitewalls being in such scarcity but then again, it has been about 25 years since I bought any over 1" wide.

Go ahead, drive a 5,000 pound car over hot highways with compromised sidewalls if you like living on the edge. The whitewalls are "raised" (thicker) in the gap for a reason.

Like I said, it has been about 25 years since I bought whitewalls over 1" wide but seem to recall being able to buy them for between $50-100 each depending on quality for standard 4-ply bias. And I was a district manager of an auto parts chain at the time. You are telling me that that have inflated (pardon the pun) that much now?

Of course back in the day we had 3 sets of tires. One for daily driving. A second were snow tires. The third were for show. So, the show tires didn't have to be high quality as long as they looked correct.

I even purchased a set of original 1940s whitewalls (the ones needing an intertube) for one of my 5,000 pound Imperials. They didn't last long and would have NEVER driven them on the highway but they sure looked cool. A bit too wide so changed to a better and proper set of 1-1/2 inch wide whitewalls.

Yep, for example Coker's site offers (3) brands of radial wide whites...
American-$199
Coker-$224
BFG-$231
....oranges to oranges because the guys in these videos are making theirs from radials.

If you which to purchase bias plies (don't get Barry started on that one-lol) you are again looking at (3) options US Royal, Firestone, & BFG for $199 each

I am surprised that one fool didn't break a arm trying to grind a spinning tire with a spinning grinder. I have worked with those steel body Milwaukee sander/grinders in the past and they can be a challenge to keep steady!

Point taken... like spending $5 in gas to save $2 at the grocery store.
