I have the opportunity to replace the insulation on the exhaust pipes(with a reasonable fascimile) and was wondering how long the would have been originally. Anyone care to comment? Thanks, Dave

The shields on my car go from the manifold flange to the first joint, where the shield is held in compression by the pipe clamp. That way they don't rattle. If yours are too short you can use an appropriate size clamp anywher on the exhaust pipe, snug it up and use a hammer to tap the coil shield into compression, and then tighten.

It looks cleaner with one clamp, but who cares if there are two. I wish they has continued the shield all the way into the rocker and put the clamp there. The rusty lower pipe is the ugliest part of my car.

Thanks Barry, I'll work something out.

I also would have preferred there were a grommet (non rubber, of course) on the inner fenderwell where that big raw hole is that the exhaust pipe passes through. That would have given things a finished look. Fine cars should have fine details.

The shop Manuel shows an insulated sleeve around the pipes that go through the fenders. I would assume that those shelves were made of asbestos. And for those that insist on authenticity I just happen to have a roll of asbestos that I would be willing to part with.:D

Are you saying a layer of braided asbestos between the stainless and steel exhaust pipe? That certainly would minimize the bluing I've experienced. What diameter sleeve is it?

I was going to take mine off soon to polish them and to resolve an exhaust leak. I may have the lower pipe powder coated while I have it off.

Yes that would certainly minimize the bluing. But where did the stainless steel tubing come from? Are you sure that was put on at the factory? To the best of my recall my car never had that, there was just the exhaust pipe with some type of insulating sleeve.

They all had a flexible wrap. It was probably taken off your car when the system was replaced at some time. It's in the parts manual and authenticity manual as "galvanized" flex tubing.

Maybe we can see what is on the pipes on the original Factory photos in the Technical Manual. As far as I know, this flexible stainless was correct.

Mine have discolored too. What's the best stuff to use to polish them up?

I have found that using any kind of polishing or rubbing compound will do the trick. I'm going to take mine off and polish them on a wheel.

In the authenticity manual there are several engine compartment photos. Some have a silver wrap and some have a black spiral wrap, but they all have a flexible wrap.

Check out Caswell plating they have some special stuff just for this. But then they also have lots of special stuff for just about any need you might have.:D

The authenticity manual states the "insulation" was galvanized but LCOC will accept stainlees steel flex tube. When I got mine it had very old and worn galvanized wrap of which I replaced with stainless.

Jack Rosen sells this in Stainless Steel Form.

Exhaust Pipe Covering Stainless Steel Conduit EX011 50.00 Pair

Co-incidentally, I was in my neighborhood hardware store yesterday and they carry the 2 1/2" Dia Galvanized Flex Pipe in 8' lengths for $35.

Stainless is far better looking, IMO.
