Mark II Color Database/Resource

As I have posted elsewhere, I am reupholstering my dashboard on 1494, Interior 1M6E. The dashboard, biscuits, and trim leather are "M" Medium Green, so I wanted to get a good color match and took a sample to my local automotive paint store.

They have a Spectramaster camera and system, and took a picture of my sample and ran it through their system. The result was Spectramaster Code GS361, Formula #419287. Their sample card was an exact match to my leather sample.

So, I'm wondering if we couldn't do something like that across the board and have them as a central resource on the Forum?

I have a number of several leather pieces in various colors which I could have analyzed and coded. I'm wondering what everyone's opinions/suggestions are on that? Does anyone have experience with Spectramaster or other color matching resources?

This might be easier than trying to match 1948 Tucker Torpedo Waltz Blue.

As an aside the leather, plastic and metal pieces that were supposed to be the same color (e.g. medium green) were supposed to be exactly the same color with exactly the same gloss level. One area was not supposed to draw attention away from another area. High gloss metal alongside the normal matte gloss of leather was a "No-No"!

I have some pieces of the leather (deep grey) if you would like me to send you a piece. How big a piece is needed? Too late for the matt interior paint for me, it is all gloss.

2" x 2" or slightly larger will work great.

I have used Spectramatch for a Porsche with a U/I red and got a perfect match. One problem we might run up against, however, is getting the code. I asked for it as it wasn't on the container and the response was, "Oh, you just bring the container back. We keep it in the computer." I would guess that this varies by vendor and perhaps how much pressure is applied. I think you have a great idea. I wonder if the chip samples from the original sample sheet for Mark IIs are large enough to be scanned? If so, does anyone have any pull with a shop salesman that has Spepctramatch to scan them all and provide the codes? Obviously, everyone would have to be aware that the correct code for the original paint color wouldn't match what is on their car for a partial repaint or touchup unless it has the original paint and been in a time vault.

I think my local paint guy will do it. I think he's facinated by the whole Mark II thing.

I'm not sure that the paint chips are large enough, they have to fully cover the camera aperture.

I think the lighter colors are going to be more of a problem, I think that they degraded more than the darker colors. I've been struggling to get a good sample of Medium Beige (Brown) to photograph (Lots of color variations throughout the interior even with the metal pieces) they all seem to be washed out. Deep Red looks like it'll be an easy one.

In my last post I reported that I got a match on medium green. Now I don't think so. I got a good match with the sample I took in, but then I considered my metal pieces which are a lighter shade of green. I had discounted them because they had been repainted in an old restoration and I just thought they had made a mistake when painting the metal....HOWEVER....I have some original upholstery pieces that I bought from Shelby Jenkins' daughter. Shelby had used them as patterns when he was reupholstering cars. One of them is a medium green front seat bolster and I found that the leather that had been covered by the welting was much lighter than the exposed green of the bolster and MUCH closer to the lighter green of the repainted metal pieces. Now, I'm back trying to find a good sample of the original color. Unfortunately, the medium green leather in my sample book has aged, too!

Has anyone had any success in matching the Red and White leather interior? I am looking for a source to replace the original. Any input on Red carpet would be appreciated. Also has Starmist White been duplcated? Many thanks in advance for any leeds.

I am working on sourcing leather for a red biscuit white bolster interior for my car. I keep vacillating between White exterior or Deep Red - I have seen so much variation on the Red that I keep watching this thread to see if we get some agreed upon codes for modern paint. I will post my source as soon as my upholstery guy confirms. FYI I know that BoW is out as their new dying process does not duplicate the red correctly.

Thanks for your reply. Please keep me posted as I will do the same if I find anything. I am getting some leather samples from Bill Hirsch Auto mailed to me. They use to carry BOW Leather, but not anymore.
