View Full Version : Stand Up and Be Counted - Mark II Data Lists
Chuck Lutz

Shelly has posted the updated Mark II Data Sheet incorporating the LCOC listings of 1956-57 Mark IIs and their locations.
At the suggestion of one of our members, I've also add the city and state of any listed original selling dealerships.
Our hope is to continue to refine, correct and keep this updated on a regular basis.
To this end, we need YOU!
Please look over the listing of your car and 1) verify the information, 2) See that you are listed as the current owner and state, and 3) Forward any additional information you have to me via my email markii2287@sbcglobal.net
One more request... if you are a member of the Forum and own a Mark II please update your Vin# in your profile. On later revisions I plan to acknowledge our members on this list.
Many Thanks,
Chuck

May I add that many of us are connected to other Mark II owners that are not members of the club, or this site.
Please contact them and ask permission to use their name location and serial number in our data base.

I especially want to acknowlege the effort of Chuck and Barry in in this project, and to thank them for their work.
Please get the information requested to them so that our forum can become the definitive Registry for Mark IIs.

Sorry for my ignorance, but where can I check the listing to check on my car's dats?

I have access to registration databases for 19 states that list them as public access. Some are current and some "recent" and have been looking up Mark II owners and locations this way. The past two days I have looked up quite a few and passed along to Chuck for inclusion (update) of the database. Just wish it could be a broader span to fill in even more gaps for the Composite Data Sheet. Not listing names here but here is a list of VIN numbers I have located not on the database list:

Wow, this is amazing! I've exchanged some emails with Eric over the past few days and wanted to express my thanks for his spirit and assistance in this project. I understand the time to sift through all this information but it's also, for me, fun doing it. We will refine this list and continue to update it. The out pouring of support in this effort has been wonderful. Keep those cards and letter coming. My weekdays are dedicated (mostly) to a "day-job" but I will get this information into the matrix and get it updated on forum.
Another fun thing that developed out of this campaign was a note I received from a Mark II owner who views our forum regularly but had never joined. Jim Storck of Storm Lake, Iowa gave me information on his car and sent pictures. The car's black finish was like glass in the photo. It’s a truly beautiful car that he's owned since 1969 as the 3rd owner. Jim knows a lot about Mark IIs but, I understand, he is highly regarded for his knowledge of Lehmann-Peterson cars. Late yesterday, after my poking, Jim emailed me that he had signed up here. I think my line about it being worth the price of admission did it!
Welcome Jim and we'll get him to post the picture of his gorgeous C56D2699 Black beauty.

There are two other cars mentioned in this letter, C5681120 and C5681248. Can you search for those? Art Sears is sure that 1120 is the other convertible they built. I speculate that 1248 was parted out as it had a dash fire and there were no other parts in the pipeline in September of 1955. It's Production Order is missing from the BFRC files, as far as I know.

Chuck, a few months ago I took a drive over to Morgan Hill and took a look at a 56 Mark II which was for sale, I didn't buy it, the guy wanted too much. I don't have the owners name anymore but I did write down the vin number and took a few photos of the car. I was wondering if you wanted this type of information I can forward it to you.
I guess you can't really update the data base without a name, but maybe you could make a note that as of September 09 it was still alive...barely.

I looked at this post last night and the link came up. Now it doesn't.
Very Cool. I saw a photo of the original dealer's document jacket showing Metcalf - Mayer #2 California Dr. Burlingame, CA. Drove right by there yesterday to pick up my daughter at school. That area has been an "Auto Row" for as long as I've been here and clear back to the 50's I guess. I don't remember which dealer is in there now but I'll get a photo next time there. Thanks Rodney.

Hint. Take lots of pictures during dis-assembly and carefully note the order in which you remove parts. Otherwise it can be a giant jigsaw puzzle when to try to but it back together.
Barry Wolk
01-28-2010, 09:48 PM
Mad, I have to tell you, nothing is labeled on the limo. I don't do projects that way.
For me, half the fun of restorations is the jigsaw puzzle aspect. When I was younger I used to compete in jigsaw puzzle competitions. I love basket-case cars when they're complete. They're most challenging.
I find that the engineering that went into most cars allows you to pretty much figure out how things went together. Yes, it's helpful to remember the order, but typically things only fit in only one way. Cars are made to be assembled by anyone with minimal technical training. That would be me. I find reassembly from a pile of parts a great deal of fun.
Barry - I've found your many posts some of the most helpful and educational information on the Forum. I must admit, I've even started printing many of them out, especially the "how to" ones, along with similar posts by Mad and others who have documented their restoration/maintenance projects. I'm assembling them all in a 3-ring binder for easy reference. Someday I imagine people will be going to ebay to bid for copies as they work on their Mark IIs...
BUT, I've got to agree with Mad on this one. I go through a roll of masking tape every time I disassemble anything on the Mark II. Each piece gets a number and an arrow showing where it connected to the number before/after or which way was up/down, right/left, etc. I know it's often over-kill (you should have heard the abuse I took from a mechanic friend when he saw how I'd numbered the exhaust system--I admit it can only fit one way, but that didn't stop me). But in many cases, the numbering saved me hours and tremendous frustration. Maybe it just me, with even less than minimal training, but I vote for careful documentation on disassembly.

I think he is saying Sears says it was but the registration is saying Coupe. That doesn't mean anything especially if they go strictly by numbers that says it is a coupe rather than a convertible. Some states and/or people at the DMV will add unique information on the title sometimes and sometimes they won't, depends on the person you get at the window.
Barry Wolk
01-29-2010, 07:01 PM
Could be. Art Sears only saw my file because that's all he asked for. I didn't find the letter until much after that. Art says they made two convertibles out of black cars for Ford Marketing in Chicago.
I'm about to call the guy to find out. It could be that the second convertible was 1248.
We'll see. :D

This one really doesn't make sense. (As I emailed you back). The car is shown as a 1957, there are clearly no nostrils but it sports an early Vin#.

This is the ad

Check the picture of the trunk in the ad. The hinges show that it's a 1956, as the number indicates. Somehow the seller is just confused about the car's YOM.

The car is clearly a '56 not only by the VIN (early car at that) but also the scissor hinges on the trunk lid. Barry's right Chuck. Non A/C '56 cars had no nostrils.
The owner states the title reads 1957. This is not the first time I've seen a '56 titled as a '57 though.

My question is and I am sure this has either been addressed or at least though of. What if the car had been in an accident - especially the driver's area and this part of the vehicle has been replaced with some other parts car so it doesn't match the original assembly? I am sure those custom or rod job conversions will fall into this as well.

Use the Search tool to find items of interest. If you had entered "data" you would be able to select from a number of posts with that word. The more specific you are, the narrower the answers. Avoid words like "the" or even "Mark" as it's in just about every post. If you're looking for information or something like radial tires, just use the word radial. Hope that helps.

It's easy, you're just not familiar with it. May I suggest that when you start viewing the forum that you click on the "new Posts" link and view all the posts that have been enterred since your last visit. That keeps you current. Also don't click the "log out" link when you leave... just use your browser's exit... that way when you return to the forum you'll be automatically logged in to start with.
We had our Mark II in a local show today and I was approached by someone who obviously knew a thing or two about our cars. I'd never met him before, but it turns out it was Dave Parker, who is something of a local legend in Southern California car circles. Dave has an amazing collection--more than 100 cars, I believe. You can see it at www.daves-garage.com.
But there's a reason he knew about our cars: #2135, the car that originally belonged to the Shah of Iran is in Dave's collection. If you go to his website, there's a picture of the car. And check out its fender skirts! Wonder if those were part of the original order?

Hi Frank,
That may be a function of what you have your screen size set for. I use a Mac and that function is under System Preferences and then under Display. You want to set it to a lower number which increases the size of the text.
You may have it set at the factory setting, which is meant for much younger eyes.

I'll assume you are using a PC and not a MAC. When the PDF file opens up in the Adobe Reader viewer it initiates at about 74% size. Look at the tool bar on the top edge of the Reader viewer. You'll see a - and + button. Click on the + button till the document reaches the size you like. There are scroll bars on the side and bottom to maneuver the page into view as you like.

In looking over the database, I have noticed an large number of missing VINs particularly on the first page, or up to say VIN C5691275. From that point onward other than the odd missing single VIN here and there, the database is largely sequential.
However, in the first 54 lines, the VIN numbers jump from 1001 to 1273 implying there should be 272 vehicles but only 52 entries? Why are there 250 VINs missing?
I could surmize that these vehicles were never made and the VINs were simply incremented in some weird fashion until things settled out on the production line ... but ...
page 62 of the Restorer's Guide has a table that clearly (in my mind :-) shows at least 3 VINs that do not show in the database.
C566 974, built 6-23-55 for R Reeves.
C5681026, built 8-14-55 with Body Spec B5G 88-X CCF 814
C5691212, built 9-14-55 with Body Spec 02-1N6B-914-13 for T Webb
The 3rd vehicle, the 1212 car, was the 13th car built that day, so the other 12 vehicles would be C5691200 through C5691211. But, the database only lists 4 of these vehicles?
(Barry you have mentioned not to take too much of that publication as fact but this table does not look like something made up. There are clearly dates, trim specs and owner names that came from somewhere!)
So ... why all the missing VINs?

There is something wrong with our data base. The MIIE has all the early cars listed.
Now, many on the Invoice list are missing because there were no invoices for the "Introductory Units", like my car. There are probably no invoices for Ford-owned cars, either.
I don't believe I made a negative comment about Chuck's work. I believe my comments were about other publications.

Sorry ... confusion!!! I was referring to the Restorer's Guide publication .. by all means ... Chuck's database is fantastic.

No, there are holes in the data base that I have info on. For example, 1004 was a black car. The list I use is compiled from the Production Orders, not the Invoices. I believe the Invoices were used for the guide's list.
All I'm saying on the restorer's guide is to consider some of his sources.

Lowell Domholdt has been building a Mark II Data Base of Car Specifications for years. Below are the cars that Lowell has not been able to identify some or all of the car specifications.
Lowell has asked me to share this listing with Forum Members. I have given him a copy of the Forum Data Base and he said that he will share his full list with the Forum.

Here's why there's no 1248. It had a dash fire before it was delivered. Since it was so early in the program and there were no parts in the pipeline, I'm pretty sure it was parted out in the Chicago region as so many new cars were sent there. Since many of the early cars had reliability problems, I'm sure there was a shortage of parts.
I'd be willing to bet that a decision was made to part out the car due to the strong smell that accompanies a dash fire. You could deodorize it, but surely couldn't sell it as a new car.

Duplicated serial numbers?
A long time ago shortly after I got my Mark one of the gurus mentioned to me that several Mark II's left the factory with the same serial number. Looking through Chuck's Database I discovered:
2195 C56L3432 2 1N6B PLD-PIP-DSO Brown, J. M. Steve Hicks, Inc. Grand Rapids MI
2196 C56L3432* * (double Malmquist, Bertel T. Evanston Lincoln-Mercury Company Evanston IN
1534 C56D2772 14 1B6K AC CAPLAN, BOB & SHEILA FL
1535 C56D2772? CARRILLO. RAUL A. & NEVA TX
Did somebody with the number stamp have a bad day?
Once was bad enough but twice I could see somebody being sent to bed without supper.

Don,
I noticed that at the time and posted them as it was figuring it would get worked out in time. Not sure if it was a typo or what but I didn't want to make the determination on my own. It will be interesting if the 4 or 2 cars become known.

Today I'll be sending Rev 6 to Shelly for posting. It has a number of updates and additions that have been collected and sent to me by our member for which I'm very grateful.
This latest revision in NOT completely updated with every known listing. A number of months ago (I won't say how many) Barry was kind enough to let me copy his VIN and owner listing from the later (est) edition of the MKIIE which has more listing and more up to date data. These have not been "blended" into the Registry as yet due to the fact that the information, once optically scanned, has to be converted into a separate database (spreadsheet) and merged into the existing. Then the multiple entries have to be manually checked and selected for most current. I also received the new LCOC roster several weeks ago and that needs to be checked as well.
This is a very tedious process and I'm not whining, in fact I enjoy doing this. I just wanted to let you know it's still a work in progress. Thanks for your patience.

C56I3278 (http://www.conceptcarz.com/vehicle/chassisNum.aspx?carID=7531&iDNumID=9812)
Built to the special order of Benson Ford, head of the Lincoln-Mercury Division, C5613278 is a late 1956 model invoiced August 29, 1956. He chose ‘Green Lucite Metallic’ finish and a special combination of interior colors and materials. While it has optional air conditioning, the air intakes atop the quarter panels had been eliminated for late-production vehicles.
Benson kept his special Mark II for years and during the winter of 1958/59, had Ford Motor Company engineering staff replace the original 368 cid engine with the then new Lincoln 430 cid engine having 10:1 compression along with chroming of accessory items.
This car into the possession of the current owner from the family of the late Edson Williams, retired Ford Motor Company Vice-President for Customer Service. It has received a comprehensive restoration completed in 2009, which retained all engineering staff modifications.

The first car (#3289) Axxel mentioned above is the "Eisenhower" car that is discussed on another thread. IMO, it will be a true measure of the importance of celebrity provenance if someone is willing to take on that restoration...

Wait, wait, it was Eisenhower's brother's car. Who cares?
Would Elvis' brother's car be worth any more?

Elvis did not have a brother but in any event, I agree with Barry. A relatives car including a spouse does not have the same celebrity status. Mrs. Jack Warner car has no more value than another Mark II in the same condition no matter who may have sat in the car. Frank and Elvis Mark IIs, that is a different ball game. Gary

To some it's a different ball game. To most it's not.

Sorry, I was being sarcastic-:D-guess I've got to remember to include icons in my messages:o
Although, FWIW, I've overheard people who are supposedly knowledgeable about Mark IIs claim that Milton bought the car under his name so that Ike wouldn't be saddled with the stigma of having such an expensive car. And, on the other hand, Milton was the president of Johns Hopkins, etc. He was a celebrity in his own right ;)

I'm going to look it up but in reading all the original owners I believe there was one Mark II sold to an Archdiocese somewhere. Esplain that one, Lucy!

You guys are terrific and thoroughly enjoy the posts. I was going to sign "Elvis" but thought it may offend some rules or cause a stampede. All the same I mean it. Gary

If that does not cause Elvis to get involved in this post, nothing will. Gary

Really? Didn't even know she drove. Probably didn't need insurance. Hmm, ya think?

You'd think she was well enough connected that she didn't need any.
Maybe Elvis bought it for her.

Well, I finished searching the Weeb for all references to C56 VINs and compiled them in a previous post (http://www.markiiforum.com/showpost.php?p=8369&postcount=84).
Sorry Chuck, a bit of work for ya!
If I can offer any assistance to update the documentation ... just ask!
Pat, what of the list that Lowell has offered?
Lowell has asked me to share this listing with Forum Members. I have given him a copy of the Forum Data Base and he said that he will share his full list with the Forum.
Offer made ... offer accepted!

I have Lowell's list. He gave it to me in a Word Document. I just finished converting it to Excel. Now I'm doing some refining. It will be ready, soon!

Barry, I'll send it to you via private email. Look for it and let me know when you get it. Since this forum is public view rather than only by registering, anyone can see the information though, again, everything I post is "public access" so anyone with detective skills can get it.
Can say the previous owner was Dale Fowler of Spragueville, IA.

Eric,
I lost the contact info. Do you still have it? Never got a reply. Want to try again so we can add an entry into the data base for 1120.

You should direct your question to Shelly. I had problems at first, too.
