View Full Version : What car did you see today?

I've borrowed this from another site. Take shots of exotics to rust buckets, as long as it moves on its own.
Here's one of my favorites. It's been running around my shop's neighborhood, getting lighter and lighter every year.

One of my pet peeves. If you're going to put "speed holes" on your car, at least make sure they're straight.

Saw this 1974 Mark IV --- 78K miles.... on eBay... talk about an impulse purchase. I bought it sight unseen. SO I'm shooting crap for $6K , Won't even be able to pick it up till sometime in March. This was purely an impulse buy ---- I don't know a damn thing about the Mark's from the '70s but I'm sure I'll learn. I'll probably put another $1K in it to de-smog and boost the engine's HP.
My heart still belongs to my Mark II, this is just a side affair!!

Yummy, that leather looks like butter.
One of the maladies that afflicted just about every 460 of that era is the intake manifold gaskets failing between the intake ports on either side of the exhaust port on both sides. Once this is breeched exhaust gasses get sucked into the air/fuel mixture, messing up the ratio. It expresses itself in a stumble at idle. You can verify by taking your car off fast idle and spraying carb cleaner along both heads and around the carb base. If the rpms change, You'll know you have a vacuum breach. The 460 with the C6 trans provides lots of get up and go. Mine '77 TC still had all the smog crap hooked up, and still runs great. I did have dual exhaust fabbed for it. That made a difference and made it sound sweet.

I've got a 460 that currently sits in my 70 F100 and I seem to remember that witha stock carb setup they would either burn up or clog up the aluminum baseplate the PCV valve feeds into and some of them (maybe all it's been a while) had a crossover pipe that ran from head to head behind the intake that would burn out. Its easy to notice it sounds like a tractor. They're great engines.
Barry Wolk
01-11-2010, 03:52 PM
My baseplate was totally charred where the EGR tube went into the plate.
This was 7 years ago, but I bought an intake gasket set and a carb kit for $129 and spent a weekend redoing it. Get some help putting the manifold back in It's enormously heavy and awkward at that angle.
If I were to do it today I'd use my engine hoist instead of my back.

You bought it at the right time. In 1994 if you brought one in to a dealer as a trade in you'd be lucky if they gave you $500. You couldn't give the car away then.

I intend to open the front of the engine and change the timing set and cam and of course /lifters/valve springs. Probably change out the water pump while I'm in there. Also intend to trash the carb and do an Edlebrock with their manifold. Lastly, I'll probably send out the distributor to be "recurved" . I'll have to rent some tools so I might as well rent a hoist to handle the old manifold and set the new one down. All that is near $1k for parts..... but it should make that 460 quite decent.
Barry Wolk
01-11-2010, 05:38 PM
Sounds like you've been doing your homework. The 460 had a nylon-coated cam gear. Everyone recommends that you replace it with an all-steel gear. The nylon can break off and clog the oil pump screen.
Also, I think I read that you can get a cam gear that changes the timing back to pre-smog days.
Go to Dan's site and do a search. 460 mods have been discussed to death. There's plenty of material there.

Shelly, something else I just remembered. Between the water pump and timing cover on these engines is I believe a separate plate. If the pump shaft gets any slack in it the shaft will back up slightly and can rub a thin spot in the plate causing water seepage into the oil pan through the cover.

But rather then a new carburetor, for a few more dollars, how about fuel injection? This is the system that I used on my MKII. So far with the limited use that I have given it I have been well pleased.

Installation was simple and straight forward no special knowledge required. Plus the main reason I bought it was that it self programs itself as you drive the car. You do not have to sit there with your laptop individually programming all the different fuel maps.

First was a newer Mercedes convertible (dont know what model, i dont know foreign cars) guy had the top down at 8 in the morning, thought it was pretty funny. BTW---- yesterday afternoon I motorcycled to Riverside, only about an hour from Palm Springs, and went to this auto literature place --- Faxon, which is all over eBay, and bought the 5 volume manual set for 1974 Ford. The car belongs to an older woman who was the caregiver of the original owner. She inherited the car in 1992. Since then the car has been in good garage storage with only 2,332 miles put on it in the last 18 years. The owner had a young man who belongs to her church put the car up on eBay. I can't pick it up untill March, maybe not till April. There's snow all over till then anyway. It's in Indiana about 90 miles from my place near Chicago. Unless I've been lied to, all the mechanicals are running nice. Cosmetically all that it appears to need is a new vinyl top. But then again, all these old cars seem to need something.....

Mad: What's the name on that system? Can I read about it somewhere on the internet?
The EFI system I have is from Fuel Air Spark Technology. [FAST];) They apparently have been around for some time and are popular with the racing crowd. But this particular system is relatively new and is aimed at hot-rodders and custom cars, people who are doing retrofits to older engines and don’t to take the time to learn how to program their computer.
This is a throttle body system that will mount on any manifold that accepts a standard Holley 4150 square flange. I was very impressed the quality of machining that went into the throttle body, way above what you see on a typical carburetor. The physical mounting is no more difficult then a standard carb. But there are a bunch of wires going to it, as all the sensors are mounted in it with the exception of the oxygen and temperature sensors. Thus you have one master cable that plugs into the computer and the other end has all the connectors that plug into the throttle body. They are clearly labeled and are not a problem as to were they go.
Assuming you do not have high pressure electric fuel pump you will want their master kit that also supplies the fuel pump, its filters, a control relay, a pressure regulator, and a bunch of fuel line tubing. With fuel injection fuel is pumped from the tank to the injectors and then the excess is feed back to the tank.
Once everything is hooked up you turn on the ignition and the hand held monitor asks is this a new tune? If you say yes it will then ask what is the cubic inch of your engine? It then asks you to make an executive decision as to what speed do you would like the engine to idle at. Next it will ask which throttle body your using and how many of them. You should not need more then one unless you do some extreme engine mods and turn it into a dragster. It then asks did you set the fuel pressure to the recommended 43PSI or something else. You are then asked to count the number of cylinders that you have. Finally the throttle position sensor needs to set. Here the computer tells you the leave the throttle at idle while it takes a measurement. Then it tells you to hold the throttle wide open while it takes another measurement.
You now can start the engine. Once it warms up there are a couple adjustments to double check. And in my case fix some oil leaks.:o:o But then as you drive the computer uses the signal from the oxygen sensor automatically modify its fuel maps and the more you drive it the better it should become.
Here is their web site.

Today I finished my new gas tank installation. Poured in 7 gallons of gas, just enough, to wet the bottom of the tank. Turned on ignition and let the pump fill the system. Go to start position and after sitting for over a month it starts with no problem within one turn and 32 degree weather!:)
The price was just under 2K.

I had always abhored the cars that followed ours, calling themselves Marks. As an art collector I tried to appreciate them from that angle, but couldn't. However, putting them in the context of the times, there were other pretty outrageous designs as competition.
Over time I have developed an appreciation for these exercises in excess as just that, and nothing more. Engineering marvels that they are, the packaging leaves much to be desired, IMO.
Although, if one of the 139 Hess & Eisenhardt Lincoln limousines were to come my way at $25K or so, I'd add another Continental to the collection.

Nice. I would guess 1930. It's in good shape.
Nice. It's either a 30 or 31--tough to tell without seeing the radiator surround, as that's the easy clue between the two; 31 has a painted insert at both top and bottom; 30 just has painted insert at bottom.
Saw this one for Carman yesterday at the regular Friday night cruise night at Ruby's in Redondo Beach, CA--about six blocks from our house. Yes, not bad for a custom or resto-mod. I like the overall look, appreciate the restraint on the body and roofline, and am surprisingly impressed by dash treatment. (but not the console)
BUT one thing they didn't do and I don't like it on the stock car either is the way the lower rear fender frames the wheelwell. In every 3/4 view photo of a Mark II you can see clear through the wheelwell and out the back of the car. It looks ackward like the fender is hanging out in space. Either the opening should've been shrunk or the fender should have tucked in a little more. IMHO

Not exactly on topic but we took our 1956 Mark II out for the first time today since acquiring it last week. Finally got the brakes adjusted where I felt safe to drive it, but still need to work on them a little more. It's a good thing we weren't in any hurry because we got stopped everywhere we went. We've got a for sale sign in the back window and several people asked how much we wanted for it. But mostly it was just people giving a thumbs up and hollering, "Hey, I really like your car." We stopped to get gas - NATURALLY - and a fellow asked if he could take a picture.

Thank you. That's just like my '67, only that one's a '66. Same body style with very subtle differences with trim and emblem placements that year. 1966 was the biggest production year of the GTO, with 96,946 cars built.

My wife's favorite is the '67. She loves the bow-tie rear end and distinctive lights.
That's the class she usually judges. She knows more about the cars of the '60s and early '70s than any two guys I know. We're at a car selection meeting we're on the board of and she found that one of the entrant's didn't know what year or engine size of his car. None of us picked up on it, but she did.

You're mistaken on the years. The bow-tie rear is on the '66, not the '67. It had the disappearing taillights look with louvered units. In '67 the rear quarters, tail panel and rear bumper were all re-styled. It was a squared appearance on the '67 from the bow-tie look of the '66.

I was walking my dogs today and something about the back of this house caught my eye as I walked past. I stepped into the backyard and snapped 3 shots and talked to the owner. The owner was surprised I noticed from the street, said no one has ever asked. Most people are speeding on past in their cars. The moral of the story? Slow down - look around - go for a walk - you never know what you might see. Do you see what I do? Double points if you can name the origins.

I took over 200 pictures 'cause there was so much to see. I'll post some of them later in the week if anyone is interested.

THis is not about what car I saw today... rather it was the reaction I got driving the Mark II 56 miles round trip in commuter traffic. I wasn't prepared for what happened.
So I'm between jury trials and not staying at the in-town apt but rather today I was commuting from suburban home to downtown chicago in morning and afternoon rush. I decided to put some miles on the Mark II and for the first time I tried to drive it thru morning rush and maneuvering thru the parking lot ramps. The first 15 miles were at expressway speed and I noticed a few horn beeps which had me guessing, but then I realized drivers were getting excited seeing the car. Then as I approached the downtown area traffic slowed down to a crawl. During the crawl I'm getting high fives, horns beeping away to let me know they see the car, and drivers obviously gawking at the car. It had to be more than a dozen acknowlegments of one form or another. Then it got a bit insane... a guy creeping along next to me starts insisting I roll down the window, answer his questions and engage in conversation while we creep along side by side...(of course, it's what year is it?)
What reactions have you guys experienced?

Another favorite was the unrestored original (except older paint job) of a 65 dodge hemi coronet superstock. A 426 ramcharger which would become the legendary street hemi. Back seat deleted among other things to save weight. Here they are...

Went for a drive in Silverado Canyon today and saw these:
The first shot (under the cover) looks like one of the Shay Model A replicas made approximately 1979/80. Shay had a deal with Ford to make replica Model A and Thunderbirds on Ford platforms (Pintos maybe?) and sold them through Ford dealerships with a Ford warranty. Only lasted a couple of years and went bankrupt on the deal as I recall.

I took this picture at the Chicago Auto Show. Here's the latest Ford Shelby GT350s. 2012 models here are to be made in very limited quantities (350 planned) in red, white or blue at Shelby American in Las Vegas. Also, the first convertible since 1970 is available. Power options at 525 and 624 hp.
With cars like these Shelbys, the new Camaro and retro looking Challenger, it's 1960s muscle all over again. But with higher MPG standards and electric cars on the horizon, I wonder how long this comeback will last.

Dave,
They keep getting closer to making a car with same appeal as the originals! I'd guess that they'll keep making them until sales plumit which will probably be: a.) When all of us who remember what the first Shelby's looked like are gone and the younger buyers want a text messaging car rather than a muscle car. b.) When $5.00 a gallon seems cheap and/or it's illegal to own a car that goes faster forward than backwards. We'd better stock up on the muscle cars though. We will want them even if they just sit on display in what used to be our living rooms. (;-))

Saw 152 Model A Fords today. It was the 50th anniversary meeting of the Orange County Model A Ford Club in Hart Park in the City of Orange, CA. Typically they draw about 300 cars to the meet; today there was rain and it cut attendance by half (us Californians are soft):o. Made for an interesting venue, however, as the cars were parked in a flood control channel and the authorities were releasing water right through the middle of the show.

We saw the Deora II at a car show in El Segundo, CA, today--it's a full size, operating replica of one of the most popular Hot Wheels cars. Mattel is located in El Segundo and was a co-sponsor of a charity car show at the Automobile Driving Museum. When we arrived for car placement at 8:30 a.m., there was a line around the block--people had been waiting since 1:30 a.m. to get into the show that didn't open to the public until 10:00 a.m. We couldn't believe it until someone explained the crowd wasn't there for the car show, they were there to buy a limited edition Hot Wheel to be sold at the show. They sold for $20 at the show; by noon they were on eBay for $100!

There is so much BS about what Elvis owned or didn't own. An Elvis imitator was playing a gig at a casino in the Palm Springs area which because of my wife's Elvis obsession became a must event. In the lobby was a beautiful bright red '59 Cad convertible (not an Eldorado) which had Elvis license plates. I checked out the website of Elvis Cadillacs (http://elviscadillacs.tripod.com/) and it fails to show Elvis ever owning a '59.

Some of my favorites at the show this weekend. Look at the Tucker Torpedo 1948, rear engine 1 of 51 made. Class of '71 display. Rare '60 Chrysler 300F. End of factory Hemi, GTO Judge, etc.

F-150 with doo-dads and thingamajigs. They didn't sell very many. At least mechanical parts will be easy to find.

I don't know... a NOS thingamajig could get pretty pricy!

Welcome back to California, Shelley. Even for a truck that I'm sure has a pretty limited production, they're pretty much a dime a dozen on the Westside of LA...

Visited the Tokyo man-made island today with my son. Toyota has a "historic Garage" there with lots of old cars (mostly Japanese and European). Not one Lincoln though there was a "1956 Lincoln Continental Mark II" model for sale for 17000 yen (already had this one so I left it there). There was a beautiful 1959 white Caddy convertible and a also a black 67 Corvette split window sting ray. On another floor, Toyota had its new car line (at least 50 cars sold worldwide), some of which I never heard of.
