When I open the front hood it seems to sag about 4 to 6 inches. What needs to be replaced or repaired? Is it something that I can do?

Wow, that's a lot of sag. Are you sure the bolts are tight? The door shouldn't drop at all.

You probably need to have the hinges rebuilt. www.sms-auto.com

Does the hood line up OK when closed? If so I would suspect that the springs are weak.
But even if they are weak they're still very strong and you definitely do not want to be play with them. They are dangerous!!! Special tools are needed to change them.

I misunderstood you. You mean your hood stays up but it drops 6" when you let it go? That's normal. Does your hood rise up at the cowl? If it does the hinges need rebuilding. If not, it ain't broke, so don't fix it.

SMS charges $261 to rebuild the hood hinges, $259 for the trunk hinges + $25.30 shipping...

Well the only issue I have is when I'm working under the hood near the firewall. Gets kind of tight. Hood does not rise up by the cowl. I guess I'll just have to keep propping it up all the way with a piece of wood. It gets the job done.

OK just how far are you trying to open it:confused:
This is not the best view but it is the only picture that I have really available.
The hood only opens to about a 45 degree angle.

Doesn't it get incredibly hot under your hood? I would think that all that surface area of slow moving exhaust gas would radiate tons of heat.
It is a thing of beauty, though. I remember being stunned by seeing a '69 460 in WCF's hot rod Mark II when it was at Ford Headquarters at the Centennial.

I would think (I didn't say assume) that when you open your hood all the way, it should stay up all the way, not creap down 4 to 6 inches. But with the weight of the hood and time gone by I guess it would sag a little bit. Even we sag after a while.

I resemble that remark, but my hinges are good. It's just the cow belly that shows wear.
