I purchased an oil pressure sender switch from Jack Rosen but unfortunately, it never worked (gauge). Could there be an issue with the gauge or wrong switch?

If the gauge wasn't working before you replaced the sender switch, I would guess that it's either the gauge or more probably, the wiring between the switch & the gauge. Most engine wiring in these old cars is extremely brittle from the engine heat over all the years of use & can break with just a touch without being noticeable to the nekked eye.
You can check it out fairly easily by running a test wire from the correct prong of the 2 on the sender switch to the gauge itself. Check your wiring diagram, but I think it can go directly from the switch to the gauge for test purposes. Try it with your original switch & the new one that you purchased. That should narrow down your choices in what's defective.
Good luck on getting it out easily though, it's extremely tight working quarters & a real problem to get out with the engine in the car. Go to Harbor Freight & shoplift or purchase the 8-piece SAE "Stubby" wrench set for around $8. Specifically, you'll need the 9/16" wrench out of the set. Then get under your car, remove the oil filter & pray that the old switch hasn't "welded" itself into the block over the years from the heat. If so, soak it down over several days with Tri-Flow, continue cursing & try, try again.
BTW, did you return the switch & ask Jack for a refund? Any electrical component that's +/-50 years old, new or used, is prone to greater failure. Let me know how it turns out for you...

Thanks so much for your detailed explanation. The (new) switch has probably been there 6 years, I keep hoping that someday it will work, but to no avail. In a few weeks, when I will be having some brake work done I'll look into it.
