Hi we are brand new to this forum so I hope I am posting this correctly if not please forgive me ... my question is this... We recently bought a 1956 lincoln continental .. Its a dark blue color and on the front passenger side fender is painted in gold lettering "Dark lord dancing" and and on the drivers side on the back window is written in gold lettering also (script) "flying dutchman" does anyone know anything about what those words mean?? Any insight would be greatly appreciated since we have no history on this car at all thanks Eric and Laurie Myers

Hi,
The first thing you should know is that it's not a Lincoln. Continental was a separate division of Ford.
Second thing you should know is that you came to the right place, welcome.
I have no idea what the lettering means, but I could tell you more about the car if you'd post the serial number off the maker's plate on the driver's side door post.
And,

Hmmmmm..................There shouldn't be a plate on the firewall.
Your car was originally black, and it was a DSO (Dealer Special Order) with no air.
The DSO is a natural pigskin interior with a broadcloth headliner in medium beige with deep bronze satin finish interior paint, plastic and carpet. Sound like it's like riding in a football.;)
Do a search for "Production Order" to obtain one. As a DSO it will likely show the original owner's name.

Found out your car was ordered by a Mrs. Loring Pickering and delivered to a Palo Alto Auto Sales, Inc.
I'm sure you've followed up on Barry's lead already, but if you haven't, you've got one of the Mark IIs with a distinguished past owner. Loring Pickering was a newspaper publisher and a major figure in the elite circles of the Bay Area. Should be easy to run down a biography or obit on him and verify.

Sounds doubtful that the original owner had the writing put on the glass. Dark Lord dancing sounds like a Harry Potter thing.
Does it have the original pigskin interior?

I'm not sure they will have it for C56K3373. They told me that there was a fire awhile ago and they lost some records. For the Mark II they list C567-980 to C56-J3348 and note "many missing". I suppose it's worth a try. It's only 20 clams and if they don't have it there's no charge.

Sure would be nice if people responded once you've answered their question.

I was just talking to someone about how diverse this group is, way more diverse than the original owners, from what I can tell.

I wish mine was that easy to research!
I only got as far back as 1976 with Bill Kaiser of New Mexico thanks to linc64!

Or just maybe some people aren't quite as enthusiastic about Mark II's. After all, they got the information that they initially asked for and possibly don't need any additional mutual admiration...
