Several months ago I had the cracked right side exhaust manifold replaced. Fortunately Jack has a few on his junkers yet. Well, I started to notice some scorching on the valve cover and immediately thought either this one had cracked or needed a gasket or what. Well, the mechanic who put it on insisted it should be installed without a gasket because he said they just cause more trouble. Best is to have evenly matched surfaces and bolt it on. So I returned the car to him the other day and fortunately the problem in not the manifold or a lack of gasket.... it's the tail pipe section immediately off the manifold which goes down the rear of the right front tire well. That section of pipe has a few holes in it and its causing the scorching. Now its off to an exhaust pipe bending shop.
