View Full Version : Mark II Value vs. Cadillac Brougham

I was rather shocked to see the value of a 3 year old Mark II in July, 1959. The retail value was $4800, wholesale, $3900, average loan $3000. Similarly a 1957 Eldorado Brougham was valued at: $6400
A 1956 Premier convertible was a mere $1500.
Still, a used Mark II nearly exceeded the value of a new 1959 Oldsmobile 98 convertible at $4366- that is without AC though.
As the prices for the Mecum '57 Heaven auction illustrate (see the other thread posted today), the differential between Mark IIs and Cadillac Broughams, etc. have grown even greater over the years. While I suspect everyone on this forum perceives our cars as milestones (and maybe even as one of the last true American classics), I think much of the public views them as Ford's folly, sort of in the same category as an Edsel. Moreover, for those that don't know much about them, their lack of chrome and gaudy excess make the understated Mark IIs a poor touchstone for the glitz that characterized so much of car design in the 1950s. Personally, I like it this way...think what they'd cost to restore if the purchase price was also astronomical.

That's a great point, Doc. I was thinking of the "Ford Folly" part as I was posting the previous reply. It's odd to compare the Mark II to the Cad in my mind. They represented 2 different design objectives in the same years. The Mark II with it's "Modern Formal" concept and the Cad with the continuation of chrome. Don't get me wrong. I love both designs but each for their own merits.
Back in the late fiftys i would ride in a tow truck as a helper, the joke back then was not only the edsel but the caddy broughams & other gm cars that had air suspention , that for no reason would drop the car to the ground, you could not give them things away back then, but we never had a bad word for a mk ii continental, the only thing we wanted to do is own one,

Well, I could sing a song about air suspension with my Brougham!

I wonder if Harley Earl and John Reinhart ever met? Would have loved to be a fly on the wall for that discussion. LOL
