Shelly is yours a burgundy, kind of hard to tell from that shot.
That was my second color choice before I settled on blue.

http://collectiblecars.nytimes.com/Contest_2007/Vote.asp#COL710171This is 1957 Continental Mark II, one of only 444 made in 1957. This particular car was delivered to a dealer in Dearborn in 1957 and the car spent most of its life in Seattle. Then it sat proudly on a Lincoln dealer’s showroom floor in Georgia and was given to the University of Michigan and thence to me. The car is unrestored and runs like the day it was new. It has had a new paint job in 2004 but the interior is original and in very good condition. The car has only 66,000 miles and is driven in the summer to various car shows where it almost always wins a trophy of some sort. I have a particular affinity for this car. " I worked for Harley Copp, the Chief Engineer of Continental Division [as a flunkie...like taking a bag of his shoes to get shined in town - at least I didn't havet to shine them, getting his Lincoln slab sides washed and cashing his checks for $500 so he could have lunch. What kind of lunch was it in 1956 for that kind of money? Copp at that time was Assistant Chief Engineer at Ford Product Engineering Office and was quite ill-tempered to say the least]. Still he engineered an interesting car and eventually I bought one. Copp eventually testified Vs. Ford on the Pinto gas tank killings [and that is what they were].

Axxel, Welcome to the forum! As I can see by the red x in the box, your link did not work. Here is Axxel's '57 Mark II. Looks like the same color as Barry's Convertible. Axxel's car has a DSO interior. All broadcloth with Red leather welting.

My car is not a standard Mark II color. The previous owner told me that he bought the interior leather and then had the body paint mixed to match. When asked the name of the color I call it "BlueBarry".

Bluebarry :D Yes, now that I see a close up, you color looks lighter, while Axxel's is more of a mid-Night blue.

My car is NOT Burgundy. The color bias on the pic sucks. It's a primitive Iphone shot. Yes, I'll get a better one (eventually). The color is Metallic Brown which matches the color code on the car's serial #. I'm at the a/c shop getting that going. More later. Oh, Mobile users I change the note I put up last night. Mobile users now are forced into the Mobile mode. Probably will get that modifiedd.... stay tuned.

My dad was the professional engineer Ford used in those hearings and he did a LOT or research (in fact I have boxes FULL of photographs of similar accidents of cars that are NOT charred)

FACT is that accident was because the gas cap was left at the gas station on top of the pump where they had last filled up their car. Correct, car driving without the gas cap

a LOT of people would always "forget" to put them back on

anyway, per the intent of the thread:

Our 1st Mark II that was not a Continental test car or "company" car, the Crusoe car. I think we bought this in 1971.

have more, will have to dig

You have a case of "Mark II hood". I think I have a write-up on how to solve that, somewhere.

Ian Cowie
08-04-2009, 03:36 PM
Both the hood and the trunk are high at the hinges.
The only flush fitting one is the passenger side of the hood. The trunk sticks up when closed but you can push it down almost flush ... is it because the hinges are VERY stiff? Too much paint? I have not tried to lube it yet but because they are riveted I'm not sure how to get any lube in them. Just spay with white lithium and work it in?
Ian

Barry Wolk
08-04-2009, 04:18 PM
You can lubricate the trunk hinges on the later models but not on the early ones as they use friction to hold it open. The later ones have springs.

DO NOT lubricate your hood hinges unless you want it to fall on your head, repeatedly. I had the car serviced an they sprayed the hood hinges. I had to use a stick for 3 years before the oil went away.

Nick DeSpirito
08-04-2009, 04:41 PM
I had to get my hood hinges rebuilt last year. It was done by a place in NY state, but let that be your last resort. Let's see if Barry's remedy will cure your Mark II hood first. As far as the trunk hinges, your VIN # is right on the cusp of the change from scissor type hinges to torsion bar hinges. Which one does your car have. My car's VIN is 2453 and was built on January 19, 1956 and I have torsion bars. My guess is that you have the scissor hinges.

Ian Cowie
08-04-2009, 04:49 PM
The trunk has the scissor type hinges. Very, very stiff. You need both arms and a firm grip to lift the trunk lid up and you really have to push down hard when closing.
Hood is fine other than one side hinge sits up quite high.

Nick DeSpirito
08-04-2009, 05:01 PM
Figured that. The back wouldn't be sticking up with torsion bars. They changed to torsion in January of 1956, but I don't know the exact date. What date was your car manufactured? It's on the plate on the drivers door jamb. First number is the paint code- then the interior code- then the date of manufacture- followed by the rotation number. (they were numbered everyday and this number stands for what number your car was coming off the line for that particular day)

Barry has scissor hinges. Perhaps he know what to do.

Barry Wolk
08-04-2009, 05:28 PM
I would remove the trunk lid, but first drill two holes in each hinge where the plate attaches to the trunk lid. An 1/8" bit will be sufficient. These holes will locate the lid when you reinstall it. The same thing goes for hood removal. You'll thank me for that tip.

Step 2 would be to work the hinges independently of each other. Find an appropriate size pipe and slip it over the hinge to add about 2 feet to its lever action.

You will instantly know if its one hinge or both. Work the stubborn hinge up and down about 20 times. If that doesn't free it up then do it 20 more times.
If it's still stiff you'll be able to tell which joint is sticking by its temperature. Mark that rivet.

When you find one that's warmer than the others, let that hinge cool down to ambient temperature and try it again. Once it cools down and the metal shrinks to its normal size you may have looser tolerances, and no further action is required.

If it's still stiff, oil just that joint, and try again. That should resolve the problem unless more than one joint is getting hot.

The hoods tend to stick up when the rivets get worn. A 1/16" of wear on all the hinge points amplifies the problem because of cumulative wear. Sometimes it's just one rivet and sometimes you can tell by debris from the joint followed by visual inspection for movement in a particular joint. They can be drilled out and either bushings or larger rivets installed.

The trunk has the scissor type hinges. Very, very stiff.
Hood is fine other than one side hinge sits up quite high.

You should not need two hands to open your trunk. On mine I can open or close and latch it using just two fingers.
I would try squirting some oil or perhaps WD-40 at the hinge pins.

Seeing as how the trunk lid is nowhere as heavy as the hood so you should not have to worry about the self-closing feature  that Berry described for the hood.:D

If the front hinges do not appear to be binding, you can try adjusting them. The mounting bolts go through slotted holes giving some movement up & down and fore & aft.

P.S. love that color.

Nick DeSpirito
08-05-2009, 07:16 AM
That's right Mad, the hood hinge's position can be adjusted. The driver's side hinge of Ian's car may be set too high. Perhaps done by a previous owner and never corrected.

To get to them, you have to remove the kick panels inside the car.

Gary,

Your car is beautiful. Is that a rear antenna mounted on the right quarter?

sailormkii
08-20-2009, 08:05 AM
Yes the antenna is on the rear!!! I always have points taken off but I love it. The antenna is the original one but, as history tells me, The original front fender was damaged the first few years of its life and needed to be replaced. The new fender needed the hole cut in it so the original owner said "I am tired of looking at that thing - can't we move it to the rear?" I love it and wished Continental had placed it there to begin with. The original base is just turned to the inside of the rear fender rather than the outside of the front fender. I hope you like it.

Barry Wolk
08-20-2009, 08:20 AM
I don't understand that as ALL Mark IIs came with a radio, so all replacement fenders would have had the hole die-cut at the factory.

I'd be willing to bet a chrome-plated throttle return spring that they welded the hole closed. You can tell by putting a mirror on a stick in the area where the antenna is supposed to be and shine a flashlight on it. That will light the underside of the fender to see if what I'm saying is true.

I think they moved it to the trunk for either access reasons or aesthetics. I think it looks good there.

They all faded. I don't know why. Maybe it has something to do with the plastic they used. You can have the cracks filled and spray it the darker color of your interior to match the dash and your door handles, gearshift knob, etc.

It matches all the knobs and handles. The dash and seats are a medium light green in my opinion. The biscuits are a deep emerald green. It's mighty sad:(:(. I stopped counting large cracks after 10 and numerous hairline cracks. Sad to say the plastic is kind of opaque or translucent, not just a casted wheel with paint on it. But where do you draw the line. Epoxy and paint or $850.00 US translated into Canukbucks $937.63. Add probably $50.00+++ for shipping and extortion fees:((or the paint and epoxy:p) When my father first saw this car, he had a concerned look on his face, and said I hate to admit it, but I think you bought a money pit. I'm not sure the filling and painting is the long term answer. In talking to Jack Rosen yesterday they have a vendor that has made molds for the new resin coating in all the colors. They torch off the old resins and recast the wheel. MkII Ent. plans on making their own molds for the same purpose because the replacement (exchange) steering wheels go out right at $1000.00. Yikes. Shelly, I believe the color of your car is #08 Deep Bronze Poly or by another name Briar Brown Metalic. Can you confirm that? I am in the middle of doing a frame off on a 28,000 mile original 1956 MK II with the same color. We had to match the paint to the inner fender wells which still had the original factory yellow stamps on the original paint. There are no original tints (only modern tints which are not close in match) to make up the original formulas for Dupont or Ditzler (PPG) for any MK II paints.

Just looked at Axxels picture (#7) again. Mine is the same color as his dash, (is that picture correct? medium green? Just like Shelly's car is not Burgundy) knobs, steering wheel, except my seats are the same color as the dash, with deep green biscuits. The cloth on the door (above the window switches) is same material as biscuits as well. If you look at the gear selector, and if it is the same color as the door handles, would this be a proper match for the color of the steering wheel? As you can see in that picture, the horn ring is the same color as the leather on the dash and door. Mine is just like that. So could one assume the wheel should be the color as the horn ring, and the plastic is faded to that pale green?

Nick DeSpirito

Axxel's car interior is blue. It is also a DSO. I think you're right about your steering wheel color. It probably matched the dash and the other knobs.

Blue! So much for depending on photos for comparing colors. My green is almost faded to a blue in places, but otherwise looks like that with deep green carpets and biscuits. Hopefully we got some members with very low miles and always in the garage to figure this out.

Geez, somebody likes my car. Most of those were taken at Ault Park in Cincinnati, home of Hess & Eisenhardt. The first time we were there we took one of their top awards, the Willard Hess Award for Design Excellence awarded by Willard Hess' daughter. The second time out was pictured in front of the Futurliner receiving the Mayor's Cup.

We've been invited back this year to participate in a special circle of cars by international coach builders. It's actually one of the best concours not only for the cars, but the setting. Ault park is at the top of Observatory Hill. The show is held at the peak of the botanical gardens. Amazing setting.

We were enjoying talking to people when a very distinguished-looking black man wearing the most exquisite suit stepped up to the car. I quickly noted the very well developed security person next to him with a sidearm strapped to his hip that looked like it came out of the Terminator movie.

Whenever someone expresses interest in the car I'm more than happy to talk about it. If I sense there's an interest I offer a test sit. In this case I closed the door and saw a man in great pleasure. He looked up. I said, "It's you!" He said, "Thank you for your kind offer, I am the Mayor of Cincinnati, you have just won the Mayor's Cup.":D

I was going through some files today and came across this photo of our car. It is from the Nov. 1955 edition of San Diego Magazine. It's taken in Balboa Park; the "models" are high school students who were competing to be the "princess" of the Mother Goose Parade. The caption identified the car as the "revived edition of the gorgeous Lincoln Continental (with a $10,000 price tag)...a fashionable chariot for the tastemakers."

This picture of our car was taken by a photographer for hotrodhotline.com at a show last weekend. Our car is black and he obviously captured a pretty artistic reflection of the brick building behind the car--almost becomes a piece of abstract art. If you look closely, you can see that the star (and the hood) was wet as it was a foggy morning giving the "soft focus" look to the star.
