Hi Guys, my buddy has owned this 1956 Lincoln Mark 11 for approx 15 yrs or so. It is all original 69990 miles and runs & drives, but it needs to be restored. Rear A/C installed in back window. It does have rust on lower front side of frame and rear floor boards.
Red Exterior with gray interior. The original hubcaps are long gone. Tires are all dry rotted and need to be replaced. The motor runs good.

The firewall, near the Master cylinder, has a body tag screwed to it. Number 696. Can someone tell me what that means?

Any Help?
Mike

Hi Mike,

I am no authority but I have done a lot of shopping the last few months. The car you describe is a condition 5 car at best. I would not like to venture a guess at a fair price for the car. However, you can go to www.Hibid.com and use their quest login to search every car sold at auction for at least the last ten years. You have to give them a credit card number but they let you cancel within 48 hours and they are credible about that.

From the Domholdt Archives

The body numbers are more random. It is speculated that the series of numbers might include bodies other than Mark II bodies. They are located on a small tag on the firewall, held by two slotted round-head sheet metal screws. The location varies, but most are found near the power brake booster. The tag was installed on the unpainted body, and was in place when the body was painted.

No body number tags have been found on early Mark IIs, when few were equipped with air conditioning, and it was seldom necessary to identify a body that had the unique features (such as quarter air scoops) to accommodate air conditioning. No body tags up to C56 0 1411. First documented body tag found on C56 0 1428.

No body numbers have been found on 1957 Mark IIs. It is assumed that all bodies for 1957 Mark IIs were equipped for air conditioning (without quarter air scoops) and it was not necessary to distinguish between a/c and non-a/c bodies. Last body tag documented on C56 K 3391. No body tags found on C56K3407 and later.

My opinion only. I cut up a few and restored a few. The frame is a price killer. These cars are not worth much to begin with. I would say $5000 to $7000. Once again, just my opinion. Mark A Maromonte.

The VIN you quoted C56A1265 in your 1st post is incorrect.
Can you please recheck if possible?

1265 would be C5691265 with a 9 and not an A.
A VINs would be in the range of 1655 to 1904 and not the 1200s.
Body tag 696 would put the car somewhere in the A167x range as BT-694 is VIN 1677 and BT-689 is VIN 1680.
If you can read the engine serial number that might also shed some light on the correct VIN. There are several posts regarding this, so simply do a search.

Further info on location of VIN serial number can be found in this post (http://www.markiiforum.com/showpost.php?p=17245&postcount=1).

You can't put too much stock in trying to tie Body Tag numbers to Vins. No one has been able to figure out any sequence or other key to the body tags. Example I believe #2178 has BT673, #1969 has BT676 while #1582 has BT985.

C56A1865 the 'A' is November so I gather the date should be 11 28 not 1 28 as this is 20 cars before mine and mine is 11 30. Unless the plate is stamped wrongly

Quite right Richard.
C56A1856 is 14-1N6B-1128-8.
So, 1865 would be ...-1128-17.
