View Full Version : Water Pump
I'm experiencing a little play (1/16 - 1/8 in) in my water pump when I move the fan back & forth against the axis. I thought that Jack Rosen had new or rebuilt ones, but they are not showing up on his website.
Any ideas? Is this something I could rebuild myself?
I once lost a radiator on a 260Z to a failed water pump and don't want to wait and try to find a replacement radiator.
Thanks.

Ben,
I replaced mine last year. I got the replacement from Kanter in Boonton, NJ. They happen to be about 10 minutes from my house, so I went there and picked one up they had on the shelf. I also got a tour of the cars he has including a Mark II. Very nice people to deal with.

Are they the ones on the left when you're headed south on 287 with a Packard on the roof?

Yep, that's the place. If you go there, ask Fred to show you his cars and his Mark II.
I won't be stopping by, but my mother will be driving by there next week on her way here. I could have her pick it up and drop off the core on her way home a few days later. Hmmm...

Cool, but call them and ask them if they have one on the shelf first. You will have to paint it engine color. I went to the local auto parts store and found a close match spray can on the shelf. The brand is Plasti-Kote and the color number is GM 7220. Be sure to prime it first.

If they don't have one I have one that I don't need.
It only has 54K miles on it but it might be better then the one you have.:)

The service manual shows a lot of specialized tool to press it apart. Probably something you'll want to have done by a good rebuilder.

Kanter said they have them out for rebuilding right now so there are none in stock. They said they would have one drop shipped directly to me if I wanted. They are $146 plus about $20 in shipping. Not bad considering the damage it could do to the radiator.

I got my water pump from Kanter some years ago. Nice place to do business with. It's not much fun to install. There are some pipes in the back of the water pump that are very hard to loosen and put back. There is not much room to work.

Do you know of anyone that just sells the kit complete with Impeller? I got a press and a sand blast cabinet so I don't really have to send stuff like this out.

I wouldn't recommend trying to rebuilt a waterpump ones self. My local shop tried to press an old one of mine apart and broke the impeller.
I ended up buying a rebuild from Herb Sheffer at the Lincoln Old Parts store....and he gave me credit for the core I botched up!

Thats why I mentioned with an impeller just in case. I use 8N Ford kits to rebuild the pumps on my 50 Merc. I used to have to rebuild alot of pumps on farm equipment and not to often the impeller would break, but once in a while:o So the parts department would stock the impeller as well.
