Group,
I have attempted a couple of time to attach photos from my documents file on my PC to my forum messages. I was able to do only once a while back. All of my photo were taken with my high resolution camera. I don't have a problem with my regular aol e-mail account...just with this forum.
Doesn't this site automatically reduce the images? What am I doing wrong?
Thanks!

Do you use a photo service like photobucket. Try uploading there and cut and past the picture into your post. That's how I post my pictures.

Barry,
I've been meaning to comment.....you have the greatest photos and detailed responces to this site....many thanks!
To your response,,,I take my photos on a Sony Cybershot 5MegaPixel camera and store them on my PC under "My pictures".
I have no problems uploading them to my aol e-mails or sending them to other places....except this site.
I've got some photos to share but I don't want to add another program to my computer which is a business laptop already with problems.

Thanks Keith.
You need to understand that your pictures need to be hosted somewhere other than you computer. Go here and sign up.
http://photobucket.com/
It's not a program you add to your computer. It's an outside storage of your pictures on the web.
When you put your picture on Photobucket, you are effectively putting it on the web. Each web picture has a distinct web address. By putting that address in-between these symbols and you are telling everyone's computer that the address you have listed is a picture, and not a place.
Here's the address of the picture above:
http://www.markiiforum.com/images/vbskins/car_header6.gif
Put the symbols above on either side and you have a completed picture address that will show up as a picture.
Hope that helps.

Hello Barry,
I understand the photobucket concept I think. But are you saying that this forum can only accept attachments from such a site and not those which are stored on my computer?
I attach and send photos all the time and I have never had a need for an outside storage place for my photo file.
In fact, I now recall that I did attach a photo from my computer of my rusted out floor pan which I was able to post under the tech thread.
It is from the exact same file that the engine photos are in...same resolution, same size I presume, taken with a minute of each other.
And yet, that is the only photo I have been able to post to this site.
I am not convinced that I need to put my photos into a webbased file, but yours is the only solution that has been proposed.....and I respect you opinion.
Do you see another solution?
Does our forum administrator have a suggestion?...Kelly??

When you respond to a thread you get a window below that says Manage Attachments. That window will allow you to post pictures directly to this site, effectively doing the same thing as Photobucket, but Photobucket doesn't ever have uploading issues, such as file size.
Try the Manage Attachment file before we go any further.

first upload your pics to a host sight then.....
In edit mode on this site
First type in :
Then on the host site .....Right click properties on the picture you want to display and you will get something like this:
http://images41.fotki.com/v1341/photos/1/1091578/4579685/DSCN0001-vi.jpg
paste it between the img commands no spaces....and you will get you picture ////
Last type in

Under the additional options below the posting area, you will find a button Manage attachments. Click there and browse for the photo. Select the photo and click upload. Close the window.
It should now appear in your post without using an outside site to host the photo.

I would like to post photos but am still having problems....this site is the only place I have problems. I use my AOL account and have another company e-mail server...both allow me to attach photos from my Documents/My pictures file to e-mails.
It was suggested that I open a photostorage account on a seperate web site to store my photos. I don't want to do that or add more steps creating any new processes. I've got too many pass codes to keep up with already.
I'd rather spend the time on my car.
If it is a matter or resizing the images, can't this forum site do that automatically for incoming photos?

All Photos that are included in a post, either those called from a remote server via the "image" command or as "attachments" when the post is uploaded will be automatically resized. I have no idea as to why you are having a problem.

Try this:
Under Additional Options below the text box click the button Manage Attachements
This brings up a box where you can add documents from your computer by clicking the browse button.
Select your pictures and click UPLOAD

Shelly, Ben,
These are the procedures I have tried in the past and I will do this exactly again right now....let's see what happens.
The photo I will attach using these commands will be the engine room of my project MKII.
Thanks,Keith
OK....It just says, "upload of file failed"...as the tool bar was about halfway.
This is a JPEG image, 2.16 MB, dimensions 2592X1944
further advice is appreciated.

Ben,
I've responded to you on another thread, but I've just tried attaching a photo through the manage attachments option under posting a reply as you suggested......didn't work...I'm stumped. I really don't want to move my photos to another web site.....here, I'll try it again....and there again before it's halfway uploaded...I get a "file upload incomplete message"

There is a certain amount that the program will resize, but your file is too big to start. Try resizing the file in a photo program. Many cameras do a great job taking pictures, but you end up with large photos. You may want to change the settings to have the dimensions of less than 1000 in either direction. I typically use 640x480.

Try reducing the image size. That one is huge.
This is the message that I got when I tried to post an 8.8 meg picture using the manager.

Well, I just did a web search to learn how to resize my photos....and went on the 'Vector" site. I downloaded my image to them....they re-worked it...and offered to sell it to me for a subscription.
Unless I can find an easier way, I'll retire to my garage and work on the car instead of this computer. I don't want to trouble you guys with computer instruction....this is a site for MKII's. I'll call the geek squad when I have more time to get into it....meanwhile...no photos from me until the forum can resize the giant images I have.

OK, I now have a photobucket account with new ID and password to scrawl on my bulletin board.
I have the image on that site.....so now how do I get it to this site? I have tried clicking and draggin it....didn't work

When you click on the image a number of rows will open up below the picture. Scroll down to the one that has the picture address and paste it into your message.
The at the beginning of the address tells the computer that your posting a picture, rather than a [URL] for a web site address. By adding at the end of the photo address you are telling the computer with the additional "/" that that's the end of the address.

OK....I pasted it into this message....let's see what it looks like.
I also tried to paste it into the upload from a URL box under the manage attachments and got a message saying invalid file.

Yeaaaahhhh! After hours of instruction, trial and error I have gotten a photo onto this site. Shelly, I am not a moron...really, but it has to be easier than this. I could have put that door check strap in my good MKII in less time than this has taken. And I am sure other members would not persevere through this ordeal. If we want more photos....the site has to accept the larger images without use of photobucket, etc.
By the way,....this scarey image is of my project MKII the day I bought it.
Without much trouble it is now running like a dream...costmetics aside.

For whatever reason your photos are humongous in pixel size. Please do not post up any pic larger than 750 px in either height or width. The auto size feature seems to fail on occassion and goes bonkers with pics super large. Also the large pics distort the forum display. So if you adhere to the size I mention, you should have no trouble.

That can easily be done in Photobucket. Just hit EDIT above the picture and hit RESIZE.

Back to the point of this thread:
If you use the IMAGE method of posting pictures (calling an "image" command to another server) Please do not call up any pic larger than 750 px in WIDTH. Our auto size feature seems to fail on occassion and goes bonkers with pics super large. Pics larger than 750 distort the forum display. To resize your pics before placing them on the server download the freeware Ifanview program http://www.irfanview.com/. It does a great job in resizing and other basic pic editing functions.
Alternatively use the forum's built in "manage attachments" function to upload your pics which are no more than 750 px in width.

I also use Irfanview for my pictures. It makes it easy to do simple photo editing, cropping, changing size, etc.
I find that a 400 pixels width saves file space yet is big enough for anything that does not require extreme detail. Also for pictures that turned out too dark you can enhance colors with brightness, contrast, and saturation.
An orginial photo

I tend to get wordy so bear with me:
As has been mentioned several times in this thread, photos usually need to be downsized from the originals from your cameras to load on this site. It's a typical problem with other forums I'm on, so it's not just this site. Large forums minimize size or request that you use photo hosting sites and the img codes.
Keith keeps mentioning that he doesn't want to download another program. However, he may already have a program or two on his computer that will resize his photos, plus his camera software may also have a resizing program that's already loaded on his computer. Worth it to play with the camera's program but here's where else he and others can look. This is for those using Windows operating systems, not Macs. (I know nothing about Macs)
1. Most Windows systems (XP and earlier versions and Vista) come with MSPaint or Paint for short. It's found in the Accessories when you go looking thru the programs that your computer has. The trick here is to know where to look in that program to resize a photo. It's not labeled as a "resizer" but is listed under "Image" then "stretch" which allows you to resize by percentages. Keep the percentage the same in both "stretch" fields and your picture won't distort. Play with it to learn what it'll do for your picture after you've opened the picture in that program. You will have to narrow the white background field by playing with the corner so it matches your picture size or your photo will still be too large when you save it.
Caution - always use "save as" when changing your picture so you don't lose the original which you might want later on to print off if it's a really good picture.
2 - if You have MS Office professional, it also has resizing capabilities, found in Office Tools under MS Picture Manager. This is easier to use than Paint as it actually lets you pick the pixel size you want your picture to be or you can use their preset sizes. Just go to "edit" in that program and play with the features that come up. Again, save your resized pictures under different names and be careful when you close the program because it will ask you if you want to save changes to the original picture and you may not want to do that, just say no.
3 - If you're willing to download a really short program (under 600kb), you can go to Microsoft's website and download their Power Toy called "Image Resizer" - http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx This only works on XP operating systems, not Vista. Once it's installed on your computer, it's accessed when you right click on a photo > the window that pops up will have a list of things you can do to that photo. Select "Image Resizer" and go from there. It's quite similar to the image resizer portion of MS Picture Manager but easier to access and it doesn't ask you if you want to save your original as it will automatically give resized phtos a new file name unless you tell it otherwise. Play with it.
For myself, I use either photobucket or my website for hosting my pictures and use the tags in a thread. Photobucket's image resizer works really well after I set it to the size I want it to load pictures to their website. Then I use the drop down below each picture (you have to hover over the picture to see it) to get the picture's url address to post here or elsewhere. You can set that drop down to stay put all the time for you if you look for the right spot to click on in the drop down window.
good luck with resizing and loading.
