:)Very nice Mathew, I've got to do my underhood shortly and I've got an authenticity manual but it's in b/w with just a description of the color so it's nice to see one. If you've got a photo with the breather off showing the two choke tubes could you post it?

Hi depmike
Sorry I don't have better close ups of the choke side of the carb, but here are a couple....I can do some close-ups if you like...You'll notice that these were taken before I finished the restoration of my car's engine bay!

I can see the one with the asbestos wrap on the passenger side of the carb. If you could shoot a photo of that up close and directly across on the driver's side it would be a great deal of help. Both of your cars look great. The authenticity guide mentions that the engine is a sort of greenish gold so while everythings apart I'm going to take care of the underhood colors.

I have been told that my engine is the correct color.
Matthew
09-11-2009, 10:09 AM
Yes, Barry's is the correct engine colour...a much 'paler' gold shade. My engine is actually '1955 Oldsmobile goldmist'...Not authentic, but I just couldn't find the correct Continental gold.
Oh well...

I've never seen a VHT aerosol or any hi-temp for that matter in that color. I may play with my mixing system and see if I can come up with a color and then see if the paint rep can tell me how to make it heat resistant. Maybe a urethane. Only area that's usually a problem in any case is adjacent to the manifolds.

Hey guys....If you've seen one perfect engine compartment...you've seen them all. The only difference is the color of the firewall.;)
In that spirit I am offering an inspirational "before" of my project MKII. This was restored about 30 years ago...so after I blew the leaves off and performed the proper resusitation, (easier said than done),
she fired up and runs like a champ.
Apparently there were only 10K miles put on the engine since the restoration in the 70's.
Wish the rest of the car was this easy.
One day I'll post some photos of the engine after the cosmetics are done. Check back with me in 2015!

Chuck, I looked at a photo of the can on MK II's website and it looks like a can of paint that someone has created a paper label for and covered over the original name. Thankfully what that means is that some normal aerosol paint retailer has that color readily available so you should be able to get it. I got burned by a Mustang supplier one time who was passing off gold Krylon as "original engine paint" and he had his covered the same way.

If you have a color chip that you can take to your local paint store they will more then likely be able to mix up some paint to match it.
There is an off chance that if you tell them it is Ford champagne gold they might even have the original recipe for it.

Maybe.. maybe not. In our business (architectural metals) we often have special paint colors (from the industrial paint shop) formulated to match and provided in spray cans as touch up. I wouldn't be surprised if that's what Mark II is doing with a formulated color.
Maybe I could send you two wrapped like a salami? :)

:DHey I'm up for whatever works. I did dig out an old color book and there was a Continental Champagne Gold that looks extremely close to Barry's engine color. The Martin Senour code was 30Y-3304 and the factory code looked like I. This was in acrylic enamel but it should be convertible to acrylic urethane. A cooperative paint store should be able to cross it.

Mike,
MarkII.com has the paint in aerosol cans for $17.00 per can.

Since the jack is the same color as the engine, I took mine to a paint shop and had an acrylic enamel mixed. I applied with carefully with a long artists brush while the engine was in the car. You have to be careful to get the edges sharp but with the artists brush it can be done.
I've done this satisfactorily before on other cars. There's just no way I could see to spray this with the engine in place.

I found an almost exact match when I had to paint my water pump last year. I got it off the shelf in the local auto parts store. The brand is Plasti-Kote and the color number on the cap is GM 7220. In my eyes, you can't tell the difference from the original champagne gold.

No problem, Mike. Glad I could help. :)
Here is my engine bay. I guess I am lucky that I have what appears to have the correct gold tone. I haven't touched the engine since I got the car, but redid the sides and firewall. I am still missing the correct battery and it's frame.

I think you might be in luck!! I discovered a spraycan of CLOVERDALE PAINT INC. 94-04054 METALLIC GREEN/GOLD at work up at Fort Mac (still wondering what the heck it was used for at a haul truck/shovel dealership?). I gave a bit of a test on a peice of plastic and it looks VERY close to maybe exact. I will spray on a piece of tin for a proper match. Cloverdale is a Canuck company that just expanded into the States under the Rodda name. I got my engine paint years ago from "the usual suspect" and what a hassle.

Why is the vacuum hose to your brake booster disconnected? Without the vacuum reserve, well, you have no vacuum reserve. The tank is supposed to retain enough vacuum to stop you in an engine stall situation.
If you run out of gas, you run out of power brakes, real fast. Ever try and stop 2.5 tons without power brakes. Bad enough losing power brakes, you'd also lose power steering. Bad combo.
I believe the chrome air cover was a dealer add. They came in gloss black, I believe.
I noticed that your wipers have no hoses, are they electric? Do you have the original motor?
Is that the original engine compartment finish? Pretty nice, if it is.

No it's repaint. Thats why I sobbed a bit when the brake fluid ruined the paint on the fire wall:mad::mad:.
The rest of the paint has issues as well, so I have resolved that I will re-do this as well. Yes I know about the vacuum lines. I rigged it up this way to quickly make it limpable for once a year exercise until I get my s*@t together and finish it. Thats why I mentioned "unfinished compartment" I would rather let it sit in storage (my attached garage) and finally do it right, than to throw it together hating the results. The shape the car is in and was in when I got it (pretty much a zero rust car with what appears to be low miles), kind of makes me more determined to do it right as it should be since it's a Mark II (even though it's green LOL). Also this new forum has motivated me a great deal with the information and help available.

Ok engine thread readers....here is the before photo I promised of my MKII project car.( I have another one in good shape to keep me inspired). As scarey as this looks....this engine has very low miles since a restoration by Desert Classics. We brought it back to life slowly and it runs like a champ. Mechanically the car is great....just needs a lot of body and interior work.

Where did all the leaves come from? (I know, a tree-Duh :)) Looks to be all there, minus the air cleaner, which I'm sure you have. The A/C compressor is not original. Do you have the fuse box cover?
Keith W Colonna
09-25-2009, 08:53 PM
Barry, more photos to come now that you have walked me through the process....but it does take rather much time.
Nick, I've got the fuse box cover which was in the car...had to buy an air cleaner and the AC compressor was a Desert Classic upgrade (I'll reroute the hose away from the valve covers. The brake booster is also an upgrade as well as the front disc brakes.
This car sat in the front lawn for 15 years while the owner succumbed to emphasema but he wanted to look at the car from his window.
The star nut from the air cleaner was in the debris under an inch of rotten mulch when I moved the car. The underside though still has clean paint on the frame. The front floor pans are completely gone.....the mouton carpet held moisture and they disintegrated. The electric seats work though!!!And the tail lenses are like new. This car needs to go to a more competent restorer than me. I might eventually put it up for sale....it's more than I can handle. I am looking for another good original driver car at the right price.

Please hold back the picture size to no more than 750 px on either height or width. Larger than that plays havoc with the forum dimentions.

Does the rest of the car exist that the intake came off of or is this from your 59 Linc.? I hope you have the rest of the car this came from OEM installed. That in itself would be a very fine and rare bonus IMHO!
