Chrome instrument cover

OK, this is probably a dumb question but my 56 Introductory Unit has a chrome plated instrument cluster cover. I cannot figure out why someone, over the years, would have plated it. The rest of the car is stock (the upholstery WAS redone in vinyl though). But why not use vinyl on the cover over the speedo, etc.? If they were gonna start chroming interior parts, why stop there?

Is there any chance this was ordered this way or any other explanation?

Again, I know it's stupid. Even more stupid is I kind of like it this way!

There was no DSO issued for your car so it would have been vinyl covered. I'd really be concerned about glare off a chromed cover.
