Friends. I am new to the forum. Recently I purchased a 1956 model, imported here in Brazil the same year. Purchased from an auction and came up with an engine problem. The extent of the main rod bearings is 0.40 mm by chance this is the last measure? If so I need a crankshaft. And now? Thanks

I am surprised the journal was machined down 0.040", but if that size of bearing is still available, there are machine shops that will build up the journal with chrome and then remachine the journals to size. I wouldn't try it if the crank is badly scored, and if the crank is bent at all forget it, but I have had it done on one that had light scoring and was very impressed with the end result. As for wether or not it will last, it has been taking daily abuse for 5 years and counting on my work truck, so I guess the hard part would be finding a place in Brazil that could do this for you. Good luck.

.40 mm would only be .015" (1/64") correct? Norseman and Aussies check me on this.. :)

Yes Chuck .0157"
I use this converter when I need to

I've never seen bearing inserts that were .015 in size. So I checked with a local 92 year old (still working) machinist and he hasn't either. What's up with that?

That's why I assumed it was 0.040" instead of mm. It seemed oddball unless bearings from a different motor were retrofitted???? Mind you, if it is 0.040", that is quite the undersize to the journals.

If the U.S. is complicated, imagine here in Brazil! Will take to realize the dream of a Mark II original run again in Brazil. Here we have four copies, in a museum, another guarded, with another motor Galaxie 272, and my standing. This new piece crankshaft does not exist or similar? Sorry to bother you, and sorry for my English Brazil. Thanks

Usually, things are easy in the USA. Of course, for you and me (Europe) matters are different...Your first message confused people: you are speaking about millimeters and the people who respond are not sure if it's really mm or fraction of inches. Once this detail is solved, people in the US can help you efficiently.
Usually, rod and main bearings are offered in standard dimension, .010" (.254 mm), .020" (.508 mm) and .030" (.762 mm).
When people here know exactly what you need, they will be helpful.
Good luck!

What are you measuring? The actual outside diameter of the journal with a micrometer, or the inside diameter of the bearing inserts within a connecting rod? If one or the other is what you measured this wouldnt be all that abnormal. It could be a .010 journal with .005 wear. Is this number stamped on the bearing inserts? Even though we are metric here I still go by inches:rolleyes:

Actually I was wrong in the measurements, the correct is 0.040 inches or 0.040 ", corresponding to 1 mm. Sorry ignorance.

I have whole weeks like that. No problem.

Ask maybe Egge Machine (www.egge.com) if they do undersize inserts for that engine the dimension you would need.
