View Full Version : Oil Change / Filter

I did an oil and filter change this afternoon. I envy the owners who have a spin on oil filter setup. The cartridge cannister isn't fun to remove with all the hot oil dripping out. Then to maneuver the cannister down and out is a bit trickey especially with the oil draining all over the place. Then the cartridge comes out with a spring, a gasket etc. So in addition to a new cartridge you replace 2 rubber gaskets and a fibre one. It'll probably be a bit easier next time, but it'll be just as messey. I have five more cartridges on the shelf so I'm good for several more changes, but if someone knows of an adapter allowing for a spin on, I'd buy it in a minute.

The adapter is easy to find and if my memory serves me correct the adapter fits most of the Ford engines. I usually let my oil drain hot from the pan and come back later when the oil in the canister cools down and runs out slower (with rags placed on the frame etc.) I got a case of OEM filters so I wont bother to convert it over.

Shelley & Don-
I tried not once, but TWICE to convert to spin on oil filters, and both times I had leaks where the adapter plate seals (or didn't in my case:()...I gave up and went back to the cannister...it has never leaked a drop. Yes, it's messy as hell to change the oil, but at least it doesn't LEAK!
Don- I see you're in Saskatchewan....I live next door in Calgary. I bought my Mark II five years ago in Regina.

Bought the Fram adapter kit on eBay! With 5 cartridges on the shelf it'll be at least 15 months before I try it.

Well Shelly, I hope you have better luck than me...the ones I bought were from Mark II enterprises, and as I said, it was an unsucessful modification attempt on my part.
Let me know how it (eventually) goes...
By the way Shelly, great job on the forum...one of the best, and much needed for the Mark II community.

THanks for the kind words. Like Barry, it's very rewarding participating here. I've learned so much that I couldn't otherwise have located.

Welcome aboard! We are down one MarkII in Saskatchewan. The last I heard we had 6 or 7 here which is quite a few for a population of 950000-1 million.
This filter is a small hassle compared to other things to deal with on this car (parts and price of parts). The gasket is easier to replace when the engine cools down with a heavy grease or vaseline to stick it in place (can be reused once or twice if left alone:p). What I like about these filters is you can check for nasties in the filter (metal flakes etc.) when you slide out the cartridge.

:)For the first couple of times I'm going to have to use the oem set-up. Can someone give me the brand(any) and part number of a filter so I can tell one of our local parts guys/gals. This car really confuses them.

I hope this helps.
PS I don't use Fram! I have removed too many spin on Frams with the guts rattling around inside the can.

Thanks Don, I know they carry Wix or at least they have a sign. If not they can cross it.

I may have missed this part of the exchange, but I was not aware of a specific adaptor kit or replaceable gaskets that needed to be used when using a spin-on filter. I have had problems with leaks after replacing my filter, but tightening it usually solves that problem.
Any information on the source of replacement gaskets?

The leaks I experienced were between the adapter and the block, not between the filter and the adapter.
As far as replacement gaskets go, are you referring to bewteen the adapter and the block? If so, I know that when you buy the old style cartridge (for the stock cannister filter), it comes with numerous rubber gaskets of various thickness and diameter...I'm referring to a Fram cartridge...one or two of these, as I recall, fit well between the adapter and the block.
