View Full Version : Oil pressure bulb sender or switch
Hi everybody:
Does anybody have the part number or can refer me to a source to find the Oil pressure bulb sender or switch? I am refering to the unit that goes almost on the bottom of the engine, to which a cable is attached.
Mine is bad and my instrument is not working. The instrument itself works, but the bulb is bad and in fact shows that somebody tried to repair it in the past.

Jack Rosen at www.markii.com shows an oil sending unit for $79.00. There is a note stating, limited to stock on hand. I'm not sure how current the catalog at the website is. Jack Rosen is a long time supplier on Mark II parts. I have used him in the past for a few items. Perhaps another member can suggest another source.

Would anybody know of another source, other than Jack Rosen, for the oil pressure sending unit? Jack doesn't have them any more.

NAPA shows a number in it's listing of OP 6281, but he says it's for a warning light. Is there a light in addition to a gauge?

No, only the gauge. Narragansett has it listed for $20.00 in their catalog. Could be a replacement and not exactly like original.

Jack Rosen sold his last one last week, but fortunatly for me, turns out Jack located another source, and price went up to $86. (ouch!). Anyhow, I ordered it already.

I got the oil pressure sender bulb from Jack Rosen, with great service, as usual. I installed it in the car and unfortunately, my instrument does nothing.
Of course, it could be my instrument, but I am thinking that in such a good car (very original, with almost everything working), it would be rare, so I am thinking there might be a cable conection or something wrong... or I should better say that I am hoping it is not the instrument.
Any hints as to where should I look? are there any connectors or something outside the main wiring harness where I could check?

Look in the Documents section for the wiring harness pictures I posted. They show where all of the terminal blocks are. This car has bullet connectors for everything and sometimes the retainers fatigue or corrode. Start at the gauge and work your way out.

Double check to see if the new sender is good, short its connecting wire to ground this should cause the meter to go to maximum pressure. (Ign. on)
If it does the sender is bad.
If it does not move then either the meter is bad or the wire going between the meter and sender is bad.

I seem to remember that we used to check gauges we had to take out by taping two D flashlight batteries together and attaching wires to the ends so you could go across the gauges terminals. This would scale the gauge(rather slowly) without hurting it and give you one more idea about harness condition before tossing the gauge.

I forgot to mention I did that already with no movement of the gauge. I am hoping there is some conection between the oil sender and the instrument, that could be faulty... but I haven't been able to find it. I don't intend to take the instrument off, so far, but if I do, the battery test sounds like a great tip!

Victor,
Follow and inspect the wire from the sending unit back. It runs on the driver's side of the engine block. I had new spark plug wires installed last year and after I got the car back from the mechanic, I had no oil pressure reading. Upon inspection, I found that the wire from the sending unit was disconnected from the harness. My guess is, the mechanic disconnected it in order to remove and replace the spark plug wires and forgot to reconnect it when he was done.

Thanks for the tip. I will check on that cable and try to follow it in and out the harness. Unfortunately, I will have to do it in a couple of weeks as I have the car in my warehouse now and I need to work on a couple of others that I will be using in an old car rally soon. I will also do the brakes then. Those two things, and the red light on the gas gage, and I think I am about done with the car.... if there ever is a 'done' on an old car.
