I have two questions about Mk II Windshields: 1) What should I expect to pay for a good used windshield? 2) Are new windshields available and if so, who handles them?
Thanks for the help,
Ron Howard

Ron, I've checked with all of the glass people that I use and none of them can come up with a listing for a new windshield. Probably has more to do with low production than anything else. Also they cautioned about three other things to be mindful of in case one of the "minor" suppliers should claim to carry it. (1)Be sure they understand MK II and aren't trying to sell a Premiere or Capri windshield, (2)That a lot of the offshore glass sent here can be wavy or distorted to look through, and (3)More often than not the windshield is not going to be as thick as an original type and is more difficult(but not impossible) to get to seal. Good luck, Mike

Thanks Mike for the information. Mark II Enterprises said they had them in stock in their catalog and to inquire. I sent them an email and received the following response, "Sorry can't ship anymore windshields. Too many problems. Jack." I don't know if that means that the "problems" were with the shipping or with the windshields themselves. I have two small cracks in my windshield at the bottom. The cracks appear to be on the inside piece of glass and not on the outside. Someplace I read that there might be a repair for this kind of situation - I will have to do some further checking. Ron

Ron,
Try www.safelite.com They come to you and repair auto glass. I've never used them, but they advertise a lot on the radio here. I have had stars repaired on some of my vehicles, and after they're done you'd never know they were there. I had it done by a local Company. My insurance company reimbursed me in full for the service.

Ditto what Nick said, I've had it done on my wife's car and the only time I remember they were ever there is when someone asks if it works or not.

Hello Ron ,
I am in France and owns two Mark II (one 57 and one 56 under heavy restoration). Like you I need one windshield for the 56 as the original is broken (I will also take anotehr one as spare for the 57)... like you I asked Jack R. and he cannot send me one anymore ... so I am just in the process to send my original one to north of Europe where a very specialized glass company I am already used to work with (they made windshields for the two maseratis I own) is able to reproduce it (tinted or clear) for a limited batch ... as far I have been able to see for my maserati (a 68 Mexico) the quality is there ... correct original thickness and measurement ... let me know if you are interested ... Olivier
I'd be interested in pricing. My windhield has a crack that is tolerable right now, but will need replacing sometime.

Olivier -
I would also be interested in pricing as well as shipping costs. I may have found a used one to purchase, but won't know until next week.
Thanks,
Ron

Be careful of a used windshield. Age will cause the window to delaminate some time in its life.

Some time back I read an article about a US company that would custom make any windshield that you might want.
The only down side was they had a minimum order of 10 pieces.

I'm sure we can get an order of ten together here, depending on the price, of course.
Does anybody know if there's a kit to etch the proper PPG logo on Mark II glass? I need to get it on my door windows.

Will let you know as soon as I know it myself ... my original (cracked) windshield is currently in a safe crate box waiting the shipping company to pick it up ... my friend told me he can do both clear or tinted one in the same batch ... unfortunately the current euro/dollar isn't helping to have ultimately a low cost operation for domestic U.S ... :(

Just got partial infos .... assuming a batch of 10 pieces minimum (whatever color) ... price leaving Europe , excluding crating , shipping costs and excluding VAT (but there is not if export) and potential customs taxes entering U.S .. first estimate indicate a "not to exceed" price of 790 € by piece ... so approximately 790 * 1,48 = 1162 $ ... at today current exchange rate ... this is not free at all !! .. do not know if this make sense adding s&h and customs taxes ...

Personally, I don't think that's too bad. Considering, I was quoted approx $1000 for a redone steering wheel. My windshield is in fair condition now but with a "driver" that could change in a heartbeat.

I will also ask about the PPG and markings "etching" ... would be great if they could reproduce it ...

There's got to be a kit available somewhere to etch the glass while on the car.

Nick,
Try this. You'll probably have to have a $12 stamp made up but here's the rest of the kit.

I've etched glass using stencils and sand blasting which gave good results. But it probably not what you are looking for.

It's more like a watermark and if I remember correctly one of the vintage glass companies offers glass with or without markings. They're probably listed in something like Hemmings.

I paid $1000 for a used MKII windshield including a new gasket from a private seller last year. I thought it was a lot of money, but got a good deal on other items to justify it. It seems that I have seen glass web sites that can do this....or advertizers in Hemmings. I am sure Jack Rosen's source could be pressed back into production if the profit is there.

May have found a possibility on windshield if someone wants to contact them. Try sandersreproglass.com. They show to have a Mark II windshield available and are able to create the proper markings. Located in Vancouver, Washington. Hope this helps

Thanks for the great find, Mad! This place is not only in Jersey, it's in the same town as my bakery like around the corner :). I will call them or stop by today. If I can get the stencils made, I will get extra in case someone else need them since they are only usable once. I think the logo is the same size on all the windows, right?
