What would the interest level be in reproduction Mark II hubcaps for road use, saving the good ones for show?

Put me down for a set. That would be great.

Hi Barry
I just purchase a set of plastic hub caps that I think Shelly Harris had a link to.
These hub caps just arrived and look quite good, but they are not Mark ll hub caps. They will do for the road at present. They cost me $60 with shipping and handling
I would be very interested in purchasing a set of plastic Mark ll hubcaps also.
I wander if this firm could duplicate the original Mark ll hub cap in plastic.
Please keep me informed if you make any progress in having the Mark ll hub caps made in plastic, if you do I would be happy to purchase a set.

Some incredible reproductions are coming from overseas these days ...for instance, the scale models of cars.
I am sure a beautiful reproductions could be made of plastic, but would have to still be expensive....that's a lot of detail, surface area and chrome.
But my biggest concern is the repeated mounting and dismounting of the originals and the plastics between showing and driving. Unless you've got a show only car, you're probably going to repeat this drill a dozen times a year. Each dismount weakens the teeth on the origiinal wheel covers and increases the likelihood of them coming back off. Besides....I want to see my originals each time I get out of the car, whether to a show or for a Sunday drive. And then there is the impression made to the other observers on the road....we've got a responsibility to correctly represent this car to the general public.....right?

If you're on the road, no one can see them while you're moving anyway.
I'm less than concerned about the clips breaking. They're substantial spring steel.
Responsibility to the general public? 99.99% of people don't know what it is. 99.99% of those call it a Lincoln. I'm not concerned about what John Q. Public thinks of my car.

Barry, I had worked for a Ford supplier on the west side of Telegraph Road ~ 8 - 10 (?) mile road in the early 70's. They had a fully assembled Mark II wheel cover hanging on the wall, I tried to get it but the owners weren't letting it go.
they said they had "made" them for Ford.
Now I never got a clear answer to whether or not they assembled them for Ford or actually "made" them. They DID have several heavy presses and a LOT of older dies laying about in the back 40.
I think it was ~ 1974-75 time period

They were made by an outside supplier. In fact, the Mark II hubcap was originally sesigned for a Cadillac, and they turned it down as too expensive. Continental literally bought it off the shelf.

Shepard, I NEED that link. Any chance I can get it? I can't find diddly in decent-looking plastic wheelcovers.
Thanks in advance.

The ones I ordered off ebay came in today. They look pretty good and from a distance (not a trained eye) could pass for original .. sorta. I'm sure not going to mind losing one at $15 ea.

I did my best and can't find anything that looks like it ... sorry, next time I visit my mom, will make a trip to do it in person, I just can't recall the name of the place ... the building faced east, had the parking lot to the north and had some space in back where they stored all the old dies ...

Just returned from the Lancaster Pa Lincoln show. I put little over 540 miles on my 57 MarkII, and for the first time that I have owned this car I did not chase my hub caps down the road.
These plastic hub caps are great, a lot easier to put on, and give you peace of mind when driving.
In the past I would go around to each wheel and with a rubber mallet i would tap each and every hup cap.
I also know that if you do loose one, it only cost $15 to replace it.
Many Lincoln owners at this Lancaster show complimented me on their appearance, look , as well as fit.
I changed to the original hub caps for the judging part of the show only.
I would highly recommend them , and wish to thank Shelly for informing me about them through this forum .

Shep,
They did look great and so did your Mark II. How much brake fluid did you have to put in it? I had to get my car out of the convention center as they were putting down carpet for a banquet and didn't have time to say good bye to you and your wife. Owen said he would call you when he got home. Hope you had a pleasent and uneventful ride back home. See you at Mills Mansion next month. :)

Nick
I had a wonderful trip to Lancaster, the members were great and very helpful.
I did use about half of the bottle that Owen and I bought at the parts store.
Took about 4 1/2 hours to get home to Millbrook NY, and I covered about 241 miles on the return trip, got a little over 17 miles to the gallon at speeds between 65 and 70 miles per hour.
I think the engine is finally broken in after this trip of about 630 miles total and it did not burn any oil.
I now have 2400 miles since I purchased it in November of 2005.
Checked the car when we arrived in Millbrook and it did not use any additional break fluid , but I never checked the break fluid since I changed all the fluids when I purchase it.
Thanks for all your help.

Great mileage Shep! I got 15MPG. I filled it up to the filler neck before leaving to go down, and when I left the convention center for the trip home, it took a little over 10 gallons to fill it back up to the filler neck. I guess you got the two extra miles from the electronic ignition?
Anyway, glad you had a great time and a great trip back home. Many thanks to you and your wife for helping the region put on the meet.

They really make a plastic hubcap for these cars? Does anyone have a link to see what they look like?

I can't really see too well what they look like SLK because of the shadow along the bottom of the car.
Sorry, I was in a rush to leave for Maine at 5 AM. I'll get other photo's when I get back.
