View Full Version : Scarce Parts

The discussions on other threads about the scarcity of Mark II windshields and the price for wheel covers (hub caps) got me thinking about what Mark II parts are the most difficult (or impossible) to find. Obviously the windshield is near the top of the list, but what other parts are you having trouble locating or wish you could replace if a high quality (or NOS) replacement was available?

For example, while it’s a purely aesthetic thing, I would love to replace the logo in the center of the steering wheel. Ours is discolored and looks almost like it got wet inside at some point—which seems unlikely, but the discoloration looks like watermarks—and I’ve seen the same problem in many other Mark IIs, both in person and in for sale photos. I’m not aware that replacements are available—anybody got a source?

I’ll start the list of “parts I wish were available”—what would you add? If you’ve got a source, please add it to the list:

1) Windshield
2) “1956” hood pad/liner
3) Steering wheel center logo

Hi Don. I have found on ebay from time to time trunk emblems which although reproduction look like the real thing. Needless to say, I bought. two. Gary

Are you sure they are repro and not NOS? I just got one and it was NOS. I don't think the low numbers created much demand for reproducing these hard to make plastic emblems. Maby I'm wrong and it would be nice if somebody was making these.

I wan't aware that repros have ever been made. Years ago a Mark II/Lincoln seller named Francis Maffucci had stacks of original trunk emblems. (Of course I bought a few) I think the orignal Continental sub-contractor must have made a boat-load of them.

Besides if there were repros available, does anyone doubt that Mark II Enterprises would be selling them?

Hi Don. I checked and how does one know if they are NOS? Gary

Jay,

I don't have an LCOC directory here at work. Maybe someone else can post it, or I will do it when I get home.

An OEM low fuel light relay is a rare item. Some solid state devices have been made to work, but an actual NOS relay is not to be found. At least, I've never seen one for sale anywhere.

As far as I know there arn't repros:o If memory serves me correct, Jack mentions his are NOS and when they are gone, they'er gone! I just bought one on Ebay a couple of months ago. That little goodie in its self will make a difference as appearance goes as mine is quite faded.

Jack does reproduce the trunk emblem. We have the tooling and several unfinished blanks. We stopped production due to availability of NOS. To tell the difference of a original: the originals are missing the eye in the lion. Ours have the eye.

The center steering wheel emblem can be repainted. As long as your colors inside of the star are all right but the white is discolored you can paint that. My father took off all the old white paint except for the colored star which was in good shape and repainted just the white. It looks brand new now you really cannot tell the difference! Just thought I would share.

Just a reminder of the Forum selling rules:

18) molding clips for windshield surround--with the missing crown jewel being the clip that goes over the screw for the rear view mirror

Pete:

I agree about the difficulty in finding the clip that covers the screw on the outside mirror. I have looked for the last four years for that part and have not had any luck. I understand that a lot of these other parts are hard to come by also, but the clip seems to be the most difficult of all, from my experience.

I had some made. there's an old-school metal fab shop near me that does great work. They were slightly over $50 ea to make. I could see if they could make more.

Barry,

I would be very interested in purchasing one or maybe even two --(a spare) if they still make them in the $50 range. Let me know what you find out.

Thanks,
Harry

???? The lions on my Ebay emblem have 2 eyes on each lion and look identical to the faded emblem on my trunk.

Hello everyone. I recently purchased a 1956 Mark II from my Uncle in Montana. Its been only driven in parades and stored for the rest of the time. I did drive the car home to Walla Walla Washington but at low speeds it had a funny noise like something out of balance. Ive checked all the wheels and see no evidence of rubbing. Jack Rosen mentioned to me about a driveline bearing possibly going out? Anyway any tips will be greatly appreciated and I look for ward to restoring one of these beautiful American automobiles!

While looking at the driveshaft bearing, pay close attention to the universal joints as well. If there is ANY notchyness(Spelling?) to the way they move, pitch them for new. Cheap insurance. If there isn't, at least grease them until there is evidence of swelling at all of the cups or a bit of grease being pushed by the seal. They can make strange phantom noise when not up to snuff.

Thomas - welcome to the Forum. I'll be the first to ask - let's see some pictures...

Jack is probably correct, in most cases, the drive shaft center support bearing and insulator are the source of the rumbling in the drive train. Sean has also identified another thing to check out; but I'd bet on the drive shaft bearing--we had the exact same condition you described and Jack diagnosed it over the phone...
